I don't download from IRC and I don't think I have ever seen a torrent for manga before.
If the scanlators don't have their own personal online reader, I'll look elsewhere. If they do have their own though, I will use it every time. I find them a lot faster.

i just bought the entire fullmetal alchemist boxset , off of chapters.ca (EPIC canadian bookstore) and it came in the mail today im so happy.

Ideally, I read from the scanlator's online reader (if they have one). If not, I go to whatever link is posted on their site to read or Batoto.
I also borrow from a certain friend a lot...
