A male character involved in romance!
The character is kind of aloof... and doesn't care much about surroundings in a badass way or just lone wolf (rather than being weird or eccentric like Haru of tonari no kaibutsu-kun) or is simply effortless in achieving things... if that's understandable (I think I don't really know myself)
To sum it up, some cool guy you wouldn't think could be tied down by a girl
(Yeah, so no shounen ai, yaoi. Also not ecchi, harem or adult)

I can't actually think of really good examples... but maybe:
Killua from Hunter x Hunter
Kanda from D.Gray-man
Kou from Oboreru Knife
Shou from Skip Beat!
Grimmjow from Bleach (haha, really throwing in a wide range here)

Umm, for an idea of the type of series I like (for romance):
Kimi wa Pet, Oboreru Knife , Skip Beat!, Chihayafuru, Orange (TAKANO Ichigo), Six Half, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, Tomodachi no Hanashi

Kyo from Fruits Basket.
Isshiki from Penguin Brothers. Well, he's sort of aloof due to a misunderstanding, but also,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
he was like that when he was little.

Natsume from Gakuen Alice.
(Sort of lone wolf) Atsuma from Kamui.
Rimudo (in the early parts of the story) from Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden.
One of the main male characters in Koko ni Iru yo! exhibits a little bit of a lone wolf characteristic. (However, on the internet/cell phone, it's a different story..... Hehe...)

Sora Log?
I second Cat Street.
I don't remember quite well the story of Hana no Namae, but I believe it has something like that.
And Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan in a way.

I know Fruits Basket, Penguin Brothers and Gakuen Alice, and yes they're perfect examples!
I know Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden is a major piece in general. Koko ni Iru yo! I dropped because the heroine was just too much for me...
Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan I've read and pretty much also fits description, but for some reason I didn't really like the story? I guess to tragic. If it's depressing it must also be slice of life to balance : P
Will take a look at Cat Street. Sora Log and Kamui look interesting too.

Also Hibi Chouchou if you haven't started that yet. Also, you HAVE to read Cat Street it's like the most unexpected romance, it sucks that I had to reply about it here and now you're spoiled.

I am reading Hibi Chouchou right now and I love it : )
I might start on Itazura na Kiss some time, but I dunno, sounds like those over dramatic and cliche shoujos? And there's the down side there's no ending!!

Ooo! Thought of a good, not-so-well-known one: Torikagosou no Kyou mo Nemutai Juunintachi . I gave this manga a 9 rating for it's individuality. It's one of those rare diamonds (or at least I think so).

Quote from Mifish
I Koko ni Iru yo! I dropped because the heroine was just too much for me...

Quite understandable. You do have to be patient with her in order to get through it. She does develop by the end of the story, and of course, you find out who's who in the end. The story ends happily ever after in a feel good way. ^^;

Thanks for the recommendations so far!
I have read Torikagosou no Kyou mo Nemutai Juunintachi, but to be honest I didn't really like it. Personally felt that it was quite shallow in character development and plot despite it being based on a novel, but that's just me!
