Here's another poll from our member nowyat (although heavily edited). Assuming you like/love a particular series, how do you feel and react when someone else hates on, rants at, criticizes, etc, that series? This could happen in person or online (like on the forums here).

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related):
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Your best friend likes the same person as you. In a love triangle you
Choices:
End your friendship and undermine them - votes: 150 (1.3%)
End your friendship and fight fairly - votes: 107 (0.9%)
Keep your friendship and undermine them - votes: 312 (2.6%)
Keep your friendship and fight fairly - votes: 3296 (27.5%)
Ignore your feelings and support your friend - votes: 2303 (19.2%)
Convince your friend to ignore their feelings and support you - votes: 162 (1.4%)
Agree that both of you should drop the love interest - votes: 804 (6.7%)
Do nothing and see how things work out - votes: 4850 (40.5%)
There were 11984 total votes.
The poll ended: November 24th 2012

Unfortunately, I did not think to include an option for threesome. That would be interesting though...

I generally don't care about popular opinion (most likely because it so often differs from my own that I've become accustomed to it over the years), but if I really loved the story in question, I might get somewhat annoyed -- especially if the criticism is baseless: like when people say "I didn't understand the plot" when all that's required is paying attention without just reading (or watching) thoughtlessly.

However, I never react to that kind of thing, and have yet to get involved in a single flame war. It's not my place to tell others what to think, after all. And if they dismiss a great series for petty reasons, they're the ones who're missing out, not me.

I'm rather annoyed by it, certainly if the person with the criticism has only read a few chapters and then acts like knowing a whole 50 volumes of it. dead
Their are a lot of series that start bad, but become good afterwards (example: King of Hell),
Buyuden is also criticism because 'they're grade schoolers', but the time skip came really fast.
The most annoying is the criticism with racistic foundation.

Where's the "I love it" choice? I love a good argument and I love ranting. It's my thing. It ain't fun if it's someone who is a super otaku and knows all there is to know about manga. They always say the strangest things and makes for a hard argument since I don't know shit about manga laugh
I also hate those who use a bunch of big, eloquent words that could be perceived differently because they spent an hour on thesaurus.com. laugh Even if they didn't, big words don't make them right, although they think that way. Usually they are full of themselves more than I, and that's saying something, because I talk out my ass sometimes. Maybe I should utilize Google with my arguments since so many people seem to .Some people act like I'm supposed to submit my rant from a forum to to a college professor for grading (I better stop before a massive rant ensues lol). Also, if you don't like my one massive paragraph of ranting, then blow me. You know who you are biggrin

I swear, so many people on this site are so full of themselves. A lot seem to think they always have an "intelligent and/or logical" point or show signs of a superiority complex. They never admit they're wrong. Maybe partially, but excuses abound! :\

There are cases when it can be annoying, but generally I don't mind.

I get super angry IRL when people who don't even get a tiny bit of my work criticize my work.

I don't give a damn on the internet.

My reply was based on RL as well, my parents and younger brother seem to make a sport out of tearing down the stuff I like which pisses me off big time, which is why I never ever tell them what I like anymore. I hardly know any people who watch the same stuff other than them, especially people who criticize it, so yeah...

On the internet I generally don't care, the only thing which gets me angry is when people go "But he/she's a MINOR so thats ILLEGAL!" and go whining about legal crap, when the stuff isn't even illegal in Japan and on top of it all: IT'S JUST A STORY. Ugh, I really hate people like that, if you hate a story so much, don't read it.

If it's something I'm passionate about I might call the other person a tasteless asshole, but most of the time I don't care.

I generally don't care what other people think. However, when someone says something is bad it annoys me if he doesn't even say why. In fact, I like opinion to be argumented. It's annoying reading things like : "that's a good read", "it's really bad", ...

For the most part I don't care what people say especially online in RL with a pal I might want to turn it into a fun debate but its really just for fun it doesn't get me angry. The only time it get's under my skin is when it's based on misconception especially from someone who doesn't know anime well such as think One Piece (or anime in general) is childish based on the 4Kids dub.

The only time it bugs me is when you see a group of manga/anime/LN hipsters that formerly liked a series, suddenly hate it because it got popular and now other people like it. What bothers me isn't necessarily that I like the series they're hating on, I just hate the pointless posturing and hypocrisy.

Biggest example right now is Sword Art Online, where people who I remember raving about how great the light novel was, now all the sudden hate it. Like, "Booooooo-fucking-hoooooo!!!! They animated that niche Chinese book I liked and raised awareness about it, so instead of being happy that I'll get to discuss something I love with even more people, I'll be a wannabe trend-setting ass-hat and call everyone sheep for following that mainstream bullshit."

Ha, ha... I mean, the funny thing about hating something only because it's mainstream is that, in the end, your thoughts and feelings are still being influenced by the masses, right?

Heh...

As a sidenote, I am, however, a prick who'll go well out of his way to throughly read something I utterly hate, just so I can properly hate it. There are few things more satisfying than knowing more than a hysterical fanboy. In the very least, I like what I like and hate what I hate, and no amount of popularity or lack thereof will sway my feelings.

I could care less what people think about a series, to each their own. But what is irritating is people criticizing people for it... that is what bothers me.

it really depends on if they're bashing it or not. If they're just saying 'eh I don't like it' or are bringing up valid points it doesn't bother me and might start an interesting discussion. But if they're bashing it (and its fans) incessantly for no apparent reason aside from to get a rise out of its fans or because they think it makes them look cool and edgy, or making really dumb accusations then I might start to get annoyed by the person's existence.
