Okay what i'm looking for is pretty simple.
I'm currently looking for a manga that has good plot development (key word here) and will blow your mind, and what i mean by that is the situations in the storyline can be complicated and consists of great twists&turns that will keep you guessing until the end. I don't need a particular genre but make sure it isn't shoujo, yaoi, yuri or anything an average guy wouldn't really like in a manga (no i am not a guy, i'm looking for recommendations for my friend)
Here are some manga's that can help what kind of things he is into --> Itsuwaribito Utsuho Gintama Fullmetal Alchemist Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
and steins gate (the anime but i'm not looking for anime, just shooting that out there.. same with hellsing) Main characters turning out to be the hero in the manga is GOOD! or not, it doesn't matter. (just preferred)

Bloody Monday Pandora Hearts
If a Novel is ok. Then i can totally recommend Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (Novel). Well, there is a Manga version too. But forget about that! It is nowhere near the Novel! I won't admit it! No one will be able to change my opinion! Not this one!
Ahem, forget about the last part...

Argh.. -.-" I checked my list to find out if I could help you a bit, but it turned out that everything, I've ever rated high, is yaoi or shounen ai.. [Couple of exceptions, but.. Nothing worth mentioning.] There must be something wrong with me..
Edit: On a second thought.. Trace? Maybe?

Thirded Hoshi no Samidare. It's just so damn good
Also seconded Pandora Hearts. Bonus points for gorgeous art and being a guaranteed headscratcher on later chapters (in a good way). If you want to read a light novel however, I highly recommend Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria (Novel). The plot might be somewhat confusing at first, but it gets exponentially better later on. Needless to say, it's another guaranteed headscratcher.

It's a classic, but Rurouni Kenshin if he hasn't read it already.
And if he has and liked it, there's also Embalming by the same author that deals with Alchemy and stuff that's a bit reminiscent of FMA.

I gotta second Hoshi no Samidare
I'd also say Please Save My Earth, but it's a shoujo. I'm a guy and I did like it, but it wasn't the first shoujo I read, so It's probably too shoujo to anyone who didn't read any shoujo before.
There is also Immortal Rain, which while released in a shoujo mag is pretty much a shounen-like series (even the art isn't very shoujo-ish), but the plot was only good (but not extremly good).

Technically, you'd be fourthing it.
Parasyte is a classic Mirai Nikki will keep you guessing Psyren complete, and decent, but fairly shounen Negima! fairly shounen, but pretty epic towards the end
Oh and your friend may also appreciate Onepunch-man

Tower of God (Weebtoon), Very (Very) Good Nana to Kaoru Slow development, but its deep though a bit shounenish Jisatsutou Definetly Character Development.
