By the definition of pornography, which is the explicit portrayal of sexual content, then yes, hentai is indeed porn. However, different schools of thought consider hentai to be an entirely separate media. To me, hentai falls under the umbrella of pornography, while having various sub-categories (vanilla, futanari, etc.).

By my interpretation of hentai, there is no non-porn hentai, for hentai is porn bigrazz

EDIT: I find it funny that your first post had to be this thread hehe

Define porn.

By "porn" do you mean "something without value outside of supplementing self-pleasure", or are you simply asking if all hentai are sexual by nature?

For the latter, yeah. If you read something tagged as hentai or R-18, you're bound to see something sexual. Actually, your desire for a "non-porn" hentai leads me to assume you've read a "porn" hentai and thought to yourself, "Man, this'd be sooooo much better without all the sex..."

But if that's the case, then go read some romance one-shots? I mean, if you were to ask me "Are there any porn movies without sex?" I'd tell you to watch a regular non-pornographic movie (and look at you funny)... right?

For the former, it depends on who you ask. I personally haven't seen a hentai series with a story good enough to recommend (that is, if we're strictly talking manga), but I still see value in the medium outside of self gratification, if only to curb my own frustration when reading a series where the two main characters play cutesy grab-ass games with each other for twenty volumes without actually pulling the trigger on a relationship.

For example, Kimi ni Todoke dj - Breath. There, I just saved you seventeen long, boob-less volumes. /shameless Family Guy rip-off.

As for hentai with an original story, people seem to like Distance Between the Two. I resent it personally,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
as I think time should continue the instant the child is conceived, but whatever.

In any event, sure, no matter how you slice it, hentai is created to get you sexually excited. Does that mean it can't have a story while it's at it? No, but there's absolutely no point in seeking a story in hentai if you're unwilling to deal with the sex, because, well... that's the point.

Edit:
Of course, it dawned on me that perhaps you're confusing "hentai" with "doujinshi"? If so, then no, a doujinshi is just a self-published manga; it doesn't have to be sexual. A doujinshi can be anything, be it a fan-fic about another series, an original work, or whatever.

a hentai labeled manga with a good story that does not really focus all its time on sex...or that is interesting for other things than just sex
you should try

Urotsuki Douji
and other "hentai" manga made by that mangaka
like
la blue girl

but dont read any official english translated versions of these coz they remove things and change all characters age[14becomes19...]

Hentai is a Japanese word meaning pervert, so essentially they're perverted comics depicting lewd acts to varying degrees, good story or not. If it is a longer series with occasional graphic sex scenes, then the work might not be categorized as outright hentai/porn but sure does contain hentai/porn.

Also, if I've understood it right, Japanese law makes it illegal to distribute or sell pornography, and the censoring of genitalia and pubic hair they apply in comics and other media makes it not pornography and thus legal to sell. So according to Japanese law as long as it is censored it is not porn.

But is there anything that can not be pornography? If you have a foot fetish, is not video of people walking over other people bare feet pornography to you, while someone else might stare in confusion? Which would suggest that your relationship to the media is more important than the content itself; does it get your rocks off (arouse you), but not much else? probably porn.

But if you have to consider the presentation of yourself to other people, a community, the definition broadens to include the majority of what others think, shrinking down pornography to usually mean media depicting explicit sex... even then differing attitudes between communities would label even educational material as pornography if they featured nude people or illustrated genitalia labeling the different parts.

Is all hentai porn? is all comics essentially porn? emotional masturbation. pointless frivolity, hell let's include novels and all books as well, television too. With the exception of purely wholesome educational material. everything is porn...
unless you get turned on by nuns and prudent teachers. (and who doesn't?!)

So, "Is X porn?" garners different answers depending on who you ask, including yourself... Answers which mean nothing to anyone but the one who answered. If you want to know for the sake of yourself, ask yourself. If you want to know for the sake of your family, ask your family, present them with hentai and ask them if it is pornography.

Personally I don't care, but I thought it funny to ponder upon.

Of course it is. Hentai is a definition for material focused on explicit sexual content as its main or sole point.

Manga with adult themes is not necessarily porn however. It might contain lots of banging, but most of the time its not focused around it, unless it is a plot device, like a manga about a brothel or prostitution, but even then it is about a brothel and prostitution, not banging.

Jesus Christ, bro. When I'm kind enough to give you a legitimate out, you should take it, even if it's a lie, since now I'm just confused.

But fine.

Here, I JUST found some non-porn hentai for you. Yes sir, I've breached the skies of logic with my wings of stupidity to bring you some hentai without sex, some eromanga without the ero, and most importantly, some H-manga without the H:

One Piece
Bleach
Naruto

I hear they're popular.

Hentai is by-definition porn. Drawn pornographic art in anime/manga style == hentai. If it's not porn then it's not hentai, so yeah...

I think the exactly definition of 'ecchi' in English is a bit more nebulous - things with lots of fanservice get labeled 'ecchi' that I wouldn't generally call 'porn', but it's often used as 'softcore porn in animu style' as well.

Smut, I get the impression, is porn for girls.

Borderline H is on the border of porn and not-porn, and I think it's a subjective call. I would not, for instance, call Itoshi no Kana porn, but I can understand why someone might, so 'borderline H' is an appropriate tag.
