So I just started following Mahou Shoujo of the End and I'm liking it. A lot. People are just batshit crazy in it. It's also got every stereotype imaginable, but hey.
It has triggered my desire for some horror/romance stories again. I'm looking for anything that has a strong romance element while containing copious amounts of gratuitous gore. Either the horror can be the main element or the romance can be the main element.
Please no:
- Yaoi or Shounen ai
- Shoujo or Josei, unless the artwork is non-shoujo
- Gender benders
Please keep in mind that I have read or am currently reading (these are great examples, btw):
Mirai Nikki
Shingetsutan Tsukihime
Mushi to Medama to Teddy Bear
Hanako to Guuwa no Tera
Cradle of Monsters
Corpse Party: Blood Covered
Sugar Dark (OOIWA Kenji)
Highschool of the Dead

Parasyte
... goriest thing I've read. The romance is there though.

Elfen Lied
Higurashi no Naku koro ni franchise
Battle Royale novel > manga, but manga is more splatter
Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria (Novel) this is a masterpiece, but it gets pretty crazy only after 3rd volume (there is still violence in vol 1-2 anyway). Also it's a novel so maybe not the perfect thing if you just want to see something very graphic, but still the plot is mind-blowing.

Thanks for the suggestions.
@Avian3: The artwork in Ningyo no Mori is a bit of a turnoff, but Kurozuka looks interesting. Thanks.
@FormX: Already read Parasyte, and I liked it.
@Reid1: I've been loathe to start Elfen Lied because it looks long and complicated, but I might pick it up with your recommendation. Higurashi no Naku koro ni looks interesting, but where to start? lol. Also already read(ing) Btooom!.
@TheAlmight: Fail, I said no Josei and Shonen-ai. Thanks for trying.
@jelzin89: Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't look like there's enough romance in it for me.

If you can play the game, I'd start from there. If you can't but you can watch the anime, I'd do that. If you can't do either, I'd either read them from 1-8 or in this order:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
1. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Onikakushihen
5. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - Meakashihen
2. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Watanagashihen
6. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - Tsumihoroboshihen
3. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Tatarigoroshihen
7. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - Minagoroshihen
4. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Himatsubushihen
8. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - Matsuribayashi-hen
Basically imagine it as a game with different route. 1-4 are the same story which took different routes and developed in a different way, 5-8 are the retelling of those routes from another point of view, which basically let you discover who did what, how and why.
You can also read them 1-8, but remember that you won't really understand 1 until you read 5, 2 until you read 6, etc. so you could be pretty confused when you finish 4, lol.
P.S: I'm mostly speculating on this according to game/anime, because the manga is actually being published in my country and I'm buying it, so I still didn't read it all, but well logic dictates that it's made like I said above.

The only manga that comes to mind is the manhwa 'Jack Frost'. I know you'll like it. It's Ongoing, Original, and a Horror.
