10 manga I think everyone should read. This list isn't in order though (with the exception of Juujikai).

Vampire Juujikai Seriously why does no one have this masterpiece on they're top ten?

Ubel Blatt

Id

Akame ga Kiru!

Pandora Hearts

Hoshi no Samidare

Sugar Dark: Umerareta Yami to Shoujo

Mahou Sensei Negima! for the shounen fan

Psyren for the shounen fan that wants romance

Superior and its sequel Superior Cross

Ok so here is my list, most of them are well-known, but they are all epic manga:

Air Gear
Akumetsu
Eyeshield21
GTO: @kamithewolf, in my opinion this manga is a MUST read.
Slam Dunk
Black Lagoon
Kurogane
Kimi Ni Todoke
Sun-ken Rock
Deadman Wonderland

Just some comments, I decided to go for titles that weren't in the previous posts, however Sugar Dark: Umerareta Yami to Shoujo, Akame ga Kiru!, Id, Psyren, The Breaker, Eden no Ori, Onani Master Kurosawa, Freezing, Mysterious Girlfriend X, Pandora Hearts, Orange Marmalade are some really good reads and I would definetly recommend them.

I am loving this. I'm going through the titles everyone is posting and giving them a try.

I had started Gakuen Babysitters long ago, and didn't get more than a couple chapters in. I started over and am up to chapter 5 now. What a great manga.

Same with Deadman Wonderland, had read about 20 chapters - I caught up, and man is that a roller coaster. Lots of cliffhangers such as who the "red man" really is...I was just astounded. It's a very confusing book though, I think I am just beginning to understand the lullaby - it's
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
a way to keep the red man/wretched egg/Shiro asleep right?

Anyway, looking at other titles now and seeing what's good. Thank god I have a five day vacation right now, I can curl up and enjoy them to my hearts content.

I think I may continue with Kimi no Iru Machi, Usagi Drop, and Ubel Blatt. And maybe start up Id, DearS, and Pandora Hearts. What is Pandora Hearts similar to, if I may ask?

I'm on the edge of considering GTO...and as many others as I have time to.

GTO shouldn't even need considering. It's a masterpiece and is definitely worth reading.

OT: Only 10? I'll focus ones with some sort of substance or message and isn't wildly popular then.

In no particular order:
20 Seiki Shounen
Homunculus
Hotel
Oyasumi Punpun
Aria - This is more feel good than anything. Read at a leisurely pace.
Kimi ni Shika Kikoenai
Haruka na Machi e
Apollo no Uta
Pet Shop of Horrors
Endo Hiroki Tanpenshuu

Ten really isn't enough but whatever. Most of these are short but are truly thought provoking. Treat them as food for thought.

My Girl (SAHARA Mizu) for slice of life
Slam Dunk for sport manga
Melo Holic for the twist in the story
7 Seeds for josei
Tower of God for fantasy
Chihayafuru for the combination of josei and sports
Hunter x Hunter for shounen
Immortal Regis I like how both the protagonist made mistakes and isn't perfect.
Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan

The last spot is still empty.
GTO is really good, and if you still considering whether you should read it or not, then you should read it. I just can't stand the development in the last arc - which is why I didn't put it in "should read at least once"

You're free to add or take away as many as you like for your list, though ten is a way to keep it focused on what you really enjoy. There's lots of good manga out there.

My suggested format would be a Top 10 and then a list of honorable mentions, but that's just me.

I've heard that name before...I'll need to check it out since I keep hearing it.

Nice, must be good since everyone is saying so. I'll push it up a bit on my list. So much manga, so little time. smile

Heaven must be where you sit in a chair with a stack of manga to the side that never runs out. biggrin

Banana Bread no Pudding - classic shoujo by one of the Magnificent 49ers, OOSHIMA Yumiko. A girl believes that a beautiful androgynous clown may eat her if she goes to the bathroom at night, so her sister has to stand outside the bathroom door and sing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." Yes, she's crazy. But wait, there's more. Her sister is getting married, and she decides that the way she can cope with that loss is to marry a gay man, in order to help him come out. This is obviously a bad plan, but makes a great story.

Fruits Basket - It is cute and funny and deeply sad. The curse is a powerful metaphor for loneliness and alienation, and the result is a moving yet ultimately redemptive story.

Fullmetal Alchemist - Justly popular, it is that good. Full of great ideas and fully-developed characters in a complex plot with lots of twists and turns.

Heart of Thomas - another by one of the Magnificent 49ers, HAGIO Moto, this is one of the first works that started shounen-ai. Not just one of the best works of one of the greatest mangaka, this is a literary masterpiece.

Ludwig Kakumei - Fractured fairy tales. More accessible than YUKI Kaori's other, longer work such as Angel Sanctuary and Count Cain / Godchild, with more humor.

Loveless - A story of magical battles, loss, abuse, manipulative relationships, and catboys. There is nothing else like this.

Ouran High School Host Club - gateway drug to get guys into shoujo.

"Sheherazade", a short story in Sheets no Sukima - A perfect short story. It is funny, sexy, romantic, with a dramatic twist. The pacing is perfect for a story of this length. A great introduction to YOSHIHARA Yuki's funny smut.

Tokyo Crazy Paradise - What doesn't it have? Action, mystery, humor, cross-dressing, yakuza, romance.

Yotsubato! - Read one chapter and you will know why it's on so many lists. Irresistible.

No worries, I know my list won't appeal to everyone either. I look at it this way, if even one person finds a book they love by reading my list, it'll have been worth it to share it with them. biggrin

That said, I don't see anything wrong with your list, I'll have to check them out. (Huge Half Prince otaku myself, btw.)

I actually enjoy Shoujo a lot more than I originally expected, being a Shounen/Seinen heavy reader. Some of my favorite titles come from it, such as Orange Marmalade, Aishiteruze Baby, Gakuen Babysitters, Love So Life...I could probably list a dozen others but I'll stop. smile

I think I'll have to finally pick that book up too - that's another one I keep hearing about and keep saying I'll read some day. I think "some day" is here, I need to get a move on.
