before I start, please recommend COMPLETED manga only....AND BOOKS TOO IF THEY FIT
lately, I've been dropping manga a lot. im beginning to get restless looking for a good manga to read so I started this thread
ok hmm this is going to be a little difficult to explain...im looking for a character that is troubled(doesn't matter what he/she is troubled about) and because this character is troubled, his/her personality is complex and difficult to understand...this complexity profoundly attracts other characters to the main character and...urrm...sort of leaves them in awe and admiration
I don't care if theres romance. I don't care about the setting. I don't care about any of the other details as long as the troubled/complex personality and inner-struggle of the main character is the focal point of the story...and this should be handled in a mature way too(no cutesy or childish characters)
examples: oyasumi punpun(and everything else by the same mangaka) the climber Houkago Hokenshitsu helter skelter and river's edge Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan

Definitely Monster. Also I'd say Vampire Juujikai but it's quite different from the manga you mentioned above, so I can't be sure for that. Edit: beaten to Vampire Juujikai , I'm gonna second it then.

thanks, but actually...I didn't like vampire juujikai because the main character was too martyr-like(that's why, as you said, its different from the manga I mentioned as examples)

maybe the other side of the mirror. both main characters have some serious problems.
moby dick? ahab is a maniac after all. and he has a crew on his ship. I didn't read it though, yet.
the original story of frankenstein. he is always troubled but I think charismatic too.

7 Seeds doesn't have any main characters, but I think most members from Summer A fit your description, especially Ango and Ryo. You could give it a try, they start appearing from volume 7.
Ash Lynx from Banana Fish definitely fits.
I don't remember anything else. I hope I was of some help.

7 seeds looks like something I would enjoy reading but its still ongoing so i'll start reading it when its complete
as for banana fish, I already read it and although there is a character that perfectly fits my request, the friendship between the main characters was unrealistic at times and borderlines on ridiculous...that sort of ruined the story for me
Quote from jelzin89 maybe the other side of the mirror. both main characters have some serious problems. moby dick? ahab is a maniac after all. and he has a crew on his ship. I didn't read it though, yet. the original story of frankenstein. he is always troubled but I think charismatic too. read the other side of the mirror long ago, it was good, its another example for a manga that fits my request. also thanks for the book recommendations

another example for a complex/troubled character would be yuki from MW

How about Doctor Du Ming? I thought the main male character is complex and the story itself is pretty intriguing, despite being only one volume. I was shocked at the end. Also, Pet Shop of Horrors also have a mysterious MC, D. The story is episodic but deep. I really liked both of these manga. Plus they are both completed.

Maybe Please Save My Earth? I thought that psychologically, Rin/Shion was a pretty complex character. The other characters also have their fair share.
