All I remember was the main protagonist was some kind of puppet/robot with a core inside him that people were after... Anyone know what anime movie this could be?

Thanks but it's neither of those movies.
It was a kid. I'm not too sure if it was old or new but the animation did seem a bit outdated. I also remember he rescues a girl from her mother or something and she goes with him on an adventure...I also vaguely remember there being a scene with them both in a canoe. His attitude changes towards the end of the movie which results in her being frightened.
