Almost all of the attacks in this series, overpowered as they may be, never do real damage. It looks like they just make people dirty or something, that goddamned rock that fell on erza's foot actually made more damage than most magic in the series, and still shouldn't it have done way more damage? And now the b*tch demonstrates how easy it is to cut someone with a real sword but again I'm sure the damage will be minimal and I bet kagura will still be ok enough to collaborate with erza and take her down showing one more time the power of friendship. After 300 chapters this is finally getting to me, I'm getting tired of this series.

I suspect this: magic attacks hitting any body (alive or not) before inflicting direct damage to the target, consume its magic power, therefore the target will not be harmed much as long as it has a strong enough pool left to defend against it. To make it simple: fireball at mage -> mana down, fireball at regular human -> barbecue Physical attacks would work, of course. (as long as the body is susceptible to it, hitting some guy made of steel with a pipe would be really pointless) this is used occaisonally in magic mangas, as figths can get more physical. (else it would always be only one hit that is needed...) ________________ in need of romance? uncommon, sad, sweet

Shounen mangas aren't targeted to a mature audience, so it makes sense to show "real damage"... It's just like Pokémon. No matter how strong the attack is (Hyper Beam, Flamethrower etc), if it hits a person, they'll only get some scratches.

If at some point you read a story and it doesn't draw you in then it's usually worthless to continue on. I know it sounds ridiculous to hear from a guy whose read his share of manga he lost interest in but kept going. Like a few other people who've done the same. But bottom line in it is that the story shouldn't really bother you with reality and how things should be. If a story about Mages spread around the world making a living for themselves doing whatever doesn't give you a leeway to through that sense of realism out the window, then somewhere down the line something went wrong. It could be the managaka's fault, could be the editorial processes fault, could be the genre, or it could be the reader. Everything is interpretational, everyone has a different way of reading things, so it won't be the same for all on how a story can go, feel, or seem. ________________
