What is the best way to translate a dialect or accent of the original language that is not the norm (e.g., Kansai-ben)?
Different country's English accent (e.g., Irish or Australian)
Different American regional accent (e.g., Southern)
Have the character use different slang (e.g., 'pops' instead of 'dad')
Minor speech pattern differences (e.g., dropping the 'g' in '-ing' words)

This is in reference to the poll re: "Do you have real-life friends with whom you share your hobby?"

You failed to include the following option:

No. But, friends and family know I read manga and their opinions are irrelevant and don't have a damn thing to do with my consumption of manga. It is just my hobby. Moreover, it is NOT my secret, guilty pleasure. It is my greatest pleasure. Outside, well, you know. smile wink grin

What do you think of fanservice (panty shots, etc.) when the manga is not even labeled as ecchi?

- Eh? It's my main reason in reading a series...

Guys I requested a new poll for my research.

this is what I had in mind:

Poll: What aspect of translation is more important to you?

- Accuracy: I like manga translation to retain characteristics of the language of the original, to show the linguistic and cultural differences between Japanese culture and my own.

- Fluency: I like manga translation to read as if the author was native English speakers, so that linguistic and cultural differences are minimized.

I rate things ten too easily, then I feel bad when I read something amazing and have to rate it the same way I did some mediocre thing. ;P But it's hard the other way too, if I grade reviews tougher, like give a seller a four instead of five on Amazon, it makes them look bad when they did an average but respectable job. sigh... I shouldn't have started thinking about this.

Have you already done a poll on how much time people spend on manga-related activities (reading, browsing, discussing, scanlating, Cosplay, Conventions etc.)?
If not, you could ask something along these lines:


How much time do you spend on manga-related activities?
