Does anyone know of a series where the world of that series is slapped in the face with reality.
An example would be that the world is a fantasy world with all of the fun stuff (e.g unicorns, centaurs, magic, elves, etc.), but some event happens that gets rid of all of the fantasy elements of that world (e.g. unicorns turn into regular horses, centaurs become regular humans, all forms of magic disappear, elves are no longer immortal, etc.) leaving the world to be similar to a Dark Ages or Renaissance era.
I'd prefer it if the series isn't post apocalyptic. If you guys need more detail, I'll try my best to elaborate more because it's a bit hard to explain.
No Yuri, Yaoi, Hentai

This has nothing to do with your request, but the first thing that came to mind when I read the title was watamote
Oh, well.
Hataraku Maousama! This fits, somewhat, but still isn't 100% what you're looking for.

You're close. The difference between them is that in Hataraku Maousama! they escape to modern day Japan and lose their looks and powers, and what I want is that they're still in their own world but they still lose all that stuff. Hope this clarifies it.

Finished reading Personant. It sort of reminded of Surrogates with Bruce Willis.
Going to be running through Dark Air now.

That immediately reminded me of lord of the rings XD
Your scenario kind of reminds me of bokura no kiseki...with the whole magic being a thing of the past and stuff.
Also a world facing reality reminds me of Haibane Renmei because the secrets of the world are slowly revealed...
Also Kisswood and Knite because the worlds become too industrial and only then figure out the worth of nature.
+c sword and cornett because the characters find out their country's true history and dark secrets.
In this way it also reminds me of Jyu-oh-sei, with the government conspiracies and the such...although the manga hasn't been scanslated, only the anime is really accessible.
Ubel Blatt has a whole 'the history the country is built around is a lie' plot as well, although up till the point I'm at not everyone in the country knows it, its mainly the main characters and their allys....
I'd recommend Gantz as well but I seem to remember you saying you didn't like it...that has quite a succession of reality slaps...especially in the latest arc...

Read through Dark Air, and it was close to what I was looking for, but it still wasn't. In this series, only the mages lose their power with everyone else still able to use their powers. I wanted a series where everyone loses their powers and then learns how hard life really is without it.
Also, thanks for the recommendations Tsubamex, but I'm looking for a series where the event happened very close to the beginning of the series, not many years after. But, I'll look into them anyway.
And while I'm bringing this search back from the dead, might as well lift the ban on post-apocalyptic series.

Oyasumi Punpun <== Takes place in the modern world and is done realistically, but the Main Character (and his family) is drawn in a very simple bird-like caricature which help contrast the mood of the story.
Saint Oniisan <== Also takes place in the modern world but done in a slice-of-life way.
Gou-Dere Bishoujo Nagihara Sora <== First thing I thought of when I saw this topic, but probably the opposite what you're looking since the Main Female Lead is trying to turn the normal modern world into more like a fantasy dating-game world lol.
