Well I know this has nothing to do with manga, but still I thought I ask.
We're doing a debate sometime soon regarding homosexuals, now what are some good things to talk about?!
The reason I chose this topic was because since I read so many yaoi I thought I had some background knowledge of them or you could say "visual experience". Yaoi has changed my view of homosexuals completely and now I want other people to think the same. I know I can't make them read yaoi or whatever, but still in some way I want to make them think as gay people like the rest. It's kinda a personal thing for me too since I have a lot of gay friends and it's really hard for some people to accept them, they're good as long as they hide their homosexuality but once they reveal it, some people look at them in a different way, as if they're dirtied or something. This really pisses me off!!!
Anyways, back to the debate topic, the topic our prof suggested was that gay marriage should be legal. But somehow I think that this doesn't cover everything I wanna talk about. Just so you guys know,I live in Canada and gay marriage is already legal here. It's like everything is perfect for them "legally" but if you look at each of them personally you'll see that they're suffering because of their homosexuality. About 30% of suicide cases are related to homosexuals! Why is that?! Why is it so hard for people to accept them as they are! I really wanna talk about all these things. It's really sad that people get isolated because of their sexual desire. Other thing that really pisses me off is their dicrimination in several things. Like how they can't abopt kids. It's true that it's legal, but some people believe that it's not right cause there's no mother figure in the family, specially for girl adoptations! Or gay consummation, some people believe that they're not really "married" since they can't truely consummate it. But...there's a hole...you can fill it!
Anyways, what other topics do you guys think would be good?! And please do comment on the things I already mentioned, I really wanna know different opinions!
Thanks biggrin

Those who discriminate are those who are narrow-minded. You are each individual, even if how close your distance is, you are never actually a whole. That's why everyone's got the right to hate. I personally believe it's not wrong for anyone to hate anyone, cuz that's just how the world works, people hate, they get jealous, they get pissed off by things completely unrelated to them and make up seemingly logical or good excuses for their behaviors cuz it makes their hatred seems righteous. You can't simply just change that fact cuz you feel it's unfair. That's how it works.
The discriminated people can either choose to be pressured by them haters, or just live their lives as they are not giving a fuck about the intolerant general public. Of course it'd sometimes sting your feelings a little knowing folks scorn you for being different, but it's just life, accept it or leave it, yet quite surprisingly, some people choose to do that.
It's not like I'm saying outta nowhere. I know how you can't tell a person you like them cuz you're the same sex, I know how it feels facing your parents everyday putting on a facade, how people react when they know you aren't straight. I may haven't been put through harsh experience like some people out there, since my friends are quite accepting, but more or less, I know the feelings, and I'm willing to accept it all.

This might be worth looking into.

I'd blah, blah, blah about my own opinion, but it's such an obvious thing that I always feel like I'm wasting my words by reiterating that water is wet.

Yes, Yaoi is not the same with Homosexuality.
IMHO.
Its just like, I like to read Incest Manga, because I didnt think they are real person. They are just character in manga, therefore sometimes they were made to complete each other, as a pair sometimes, eventhough they are family related in the manga.
But if I think about real life incest, it gives me the shudder (I dont like it and dont want it to happen).
I have read before (I forgot where the sources is) that family, by DNA/genetically have the tendencies to reject family related to be mate candidate. Even I myself have sister, but I cannot imagine myself to be romantically involved. Yes, I love her, but as family.
Human have the capability to love, but the type of love is different between family, parents, children, friends, and lover/partner.
For same gender relation, I can only think about very close friend, but it cannot trespass the lover boundary. And for there are hole to fill, NO, its not meant to be filled. dead
Female are, Male not. Male are meant to filling. And please do it only to your legal partner.
Im sorry if I disturb anyone...

I just want to add a few things. I feel that I have given short shrift to what was a serious question, and I apologize for that. While I don't think that reading yaoi can tell you much about real gay men, there have been studies that have shown that fiction can change attitudes toward homosexuals. Here's a couple links that may be helpful:

Even Fake Gay Friends Make You More Tolerant
The Power of Fake Gay (and Black) Friends
Why fiction is good for you

...and this one about yaoi:
A Brief History of Yaoi
A quote from the summary:
Quote
Most yaoi characters aren't even realistic men, let alone gay ones. Most yaoi is fantasy pure and simple, on the level of unicorns and elves. It may be the only fantasy here that's 100% female-created, and I think should be cherished just for that.

Maybe I should put that in a sig? eyes

Thank you!!! Those links were really helpful....and interesting xD

And just to point out, I do know that yaoi is not real! It's just like how shoujo romances can't be real! But it still makes me wonder if those stories are actually happening in reality and we just don't know of them. Err...except for incest of course biggrin
And honestly just reading yaoi has made it more interesting for me to know each homosexual's point of view! Specially for the perverted part which is the first thing that comes to my mind every time I find out that a person is gay, whether or not he's seme or uke! XD
But yeah, the point of this whole thing is why shouldn't gay people have the same rights as others!

PS. Do put that as your signiture! It sounds cool and literature like at the same time eyes

I think reading yaoi can make you more sympathetic towards gay people, even if you know it's all just fiction. The whole thing comes down to respecting other people's whishes. You don't have to like gay sex, just respect the people who do.

That's exactly my point! People shouldn't be judged by their sexual desire or whatever! The importance is who they are and some people just don't see that. It's even more respectful that they have the courage to reveal their homosexuality! Not everyone can do that, but some still do it knowing that people's view might change afterwards! That's something I personally really respect.
