No connection to folklore: it tells of a girl with tuberculosis. Two Ghibli films are release simultaneously—Miyazaki's Kaze Tachinu, and Takahata Isao's (Hotaru no Haka, Ponpoko, Omohide Poro Poro etc.) film Kaguya-hime no Monogatari which is based on a Japanese folktale.

Ponyo was such a letdown, I'm not setting my hopes too high. Miyazaki might be too far from the days of Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away I'll definitely be giving it a shot, though.

Quote from Mamsmilk Agh, not another Grave of the Fireflies. Get hyped anyway. My dad probably wants to see it. If that's all you've seen by Takahata Isao try watching Heisei Tanuki Gassen Ponpoko or Omohide Poro Poro, or—if you like older ones—Taijou no Ouji: Horus no Daibouken (1968). Hotaru no Haka was, while still strictly Takahata, pretty different from most of his works.
Miyazaki's films have changed a lot during the course of his life, but there's basically two kinds of films he's made (not very strictly speaking as the elements do mix some, especially in his later films). One includes Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä, Mononoke Hime and Sen to Chihiro (but this is a good example of how it mixes with the second category).
Now this mixing might be the reason why Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi isn't one of my favourites. I find the ones that stick more to one category to be more full. The mixing gives them more escapist-esque feel, that isn't necessarily a bad thing but makes them less "pure" in my opinion.
To the second category belongs films such as Majo no Takkyuubin, Tonari no Totoro and the upcoming Kaze Tachinu.
Miyazaki's Lupin film isn't really Miyazaki in a way that his later films are so it doesn't belong to either category. Another film that doesn't belong to either of the two categories is Kurenai no Buta (Porco Rosso). This film being different from the rest and also one of his best, I think, is due to the fact that it's kind of a daydream or fantasy from his childhood, from before the Miyazaki we know came to be.
I also think that Takahata's Hotaru no Haka is similar in this aspect to Kurenai no Buta. The way it differs from his usual works is that it has that it springs from an earlier influence than his other works.

Ni no Kuni easily made up for Ponyo. Ponyo wasn't too bad either way, it was just super targeted at children it seems. (Studio Ghilbi overall)
