I like up-beat anime movies too. Most of the good ones have been mentioned so far so what else to say?

- Steamboy - From what I've seen of it, it does have a happy ending and a semi-mystery to boot. Like steampunk stories?

- Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shamballa - Familiar with the FMA series? Even if you're not, just remember that the MC is stuck in our world where we have no alchemy, and you should be fine. As a standalone movie, even if some of the characters are unfamiliar, it's still a good story.

- Lupin III: Castle of Calliogstro - Has some of the Ghibli magic (in terms of the staff members), but isn't a Ghibli film. Your classic adventure packed story of a good guy saving the girl from the baddie, buuuut, this is Lupin I'm talking here. Wherever Lupin goes, mayhem will follow. smile

- This one is just a teeny stretch, but I consider Little Nemo: Adventure in Slumberland a Japanese animated movie, more-so, considering the number of Japanese on the animation staff. Hayao Miyazaki, at one point, was part of the team and you can clearly see his work at the beginning of the movie. smile One of my fav movies to forever cherish.

And on the small topic of Paprika, I got as far as the OP credits and beginning first scene, but couldn't go beyond it. laugh (Overall though, I have no opinion on it. *shrugs*)

Quote from silencecomes
All he said was Mononoke so I didn't think he was mentioning Mononoke Hime

But it is implied that he was referring to Princess Mononoke, seeing how the following titles next to it in the list are Ghibli films.

Anyway, here's some more:

Brave Story
Seconding Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos (Don't have to watch the series, it's a stand-alone story. Much better than Shamballa imo)
Jarinko Chie
Onigamiden
Princess Arete
Colorful (Managed to be quite uplifting in the end)
Crayon Shin-chan: Arashi o Yobu Mouretsu! Otona Teikoku Gyakushuu
Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror
Only Yesterday
The Dog of Flanders
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc
Denpa Teki na Kanojo (I know this is OVA, but there's only 2 eps anyway and if you combine both of them together, you'd get something akin to a movie xD)
Tenchi the Movie: Tenchi Muyo in Love ("Even if you haven't seen Tenchi Muyo, this movie is a great stand-alone introduction to the series." -Maxis)
Gekijouban Bungaku Shoujo (You have to see the 4 OVAs first though, but it's completely worth it imo)

Hopefully the last of my recommendations. biggrin

Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor and its sequel. 3rd one is an abomination. (Even if you hate mecha, do give this classic a try. It's a much more realistic portrayal of our robot friends than average mecha shows. The characters are also down to earth and likeable.)

The Wings of Honneamise
Akira
Millennium Actress
Iblard Jikan
Tales from Earthsea
xxxHolic: The Movie - A Midsummer Night`s Dream (This actually came out before the TV series, so..)
Escaflowne - The Movie (Alternative version to TV series)
Arashi no Yoru ni
Shin SOS Dai Tokyo Tankentai
Perfect Blue
Piano no Mori
Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 1st (Alternative version to TV series)
Sky Crawlers
Spriggan
Toaru Hikuushi e no Tsuioku
The Cockpit
Appleseed and its sequel
5 Centimeters per Second
Memories
Tokyo Marble Chocolate

And lastly, you might want to check out these groups' encodes. They do lots of decent to great movies and short OVAs.

niizk
OnDeed
neo1024
Anime-FanRips
Iznjie Biznjie
THORAnime

Just click on the "Eps" column to sort by number of episodes, in this case "1" for movie or OVA.
