I'm not homophobic but I do dislike Yaoi the most, I don't participate in flame wars or anything. It would be easier if I could like Yaoi or Shounen ai because they have a lot of the content that I want to read but they're too sexual compared to what Shoujo ai and stuff are. Even Ecchi stuff doesn't usually have all the physical contact Shounen ai does and as a straight man who really doesn't want to see it in excess I can't handle it.

Honestly I've tried several times to read Shounen ai but sooner or later it focused so heavily on the shounen ai aspect.

Pointless poll because it will bring the haters on their highest level of activity and will lead to pointless flamming wars.

Imho hate in any of its aspects is not proper for polls in this cool(till-now) community. We have enough racism, homophobia and misogyny in the RL that to need them here too. ...

Second this.

What is the point of this poll beside bringing more hate between the different fandoms? As another member stated, "hate" is a strong word.

If you really want to know which fandom is the least liked here, why didn't you put something like "Is there a fandom you tend to avoid?", one of which would probably be more accurate. I mean, most of the people who posted here don't even hate the fandom they chose.

I think this poll was a bad idea lol

I don't HATE any of them, I just like some more than others. :-P shouldn't there be an option for "Don't dislike any?"

Quote from Akillarian
Hate is a strong word. I have also tried and read all the demographic, and will probably will continue reading them all in the future because just one will not sustain my reading craving and I'm an extremely picky and selective reader.

I will vote it it has the Shota or Lolita option

I stand corrected. I hate Shota/Lolita manga. Sex with child? How disgusting can you get? Funny that there's probably more yaoi haters than shota/lolita haters...

Also, guro manga or whatever... sickest stuff ever.

I guess there is some manga that I hate...

Do you even need to ask? A lot of the time people assume they dislike something because of what they assume something is about. For me the thing I couldn't tolerate is yaoi since all my fears were realized when I tried to power through a yaoi. Those hands, man. That plot. And those HANDS.

In the end, I just picked "shoujo". XDD Hentai is too wide of a genre...

Despite reading heaps of shoujo.

...Probably because, well, heteronormativity bores the hell out of me in most cases.

But this poll isn't accurate or helpful at all. I don't hate shoujo manga, but it made me pick it through process of elimination. I love shounen manga, and I like GL though there's only like two good titles, and I live and breathe BL. There are some really good seinen titles like Kami no Shizuku, and many Josei titles are actually BL in disguise. I don't hate hentai because well, I dabble in that too. /cough

I know that many of the people who picked "yaoi" are not homophobic themselves (well, the genre is a bit homophobic itself with many of its titles) for the most part. But they're made to pick it, and so the 45.5% saddens me greatly.

I have nothing against lolicon~? /more of a shotacon, though. Not the Boku no Pico or Boku no Nick Cage kind, but the Ciel Phantomhive kind where the ten year olds act like 40 year olds.

This isn't a call to stop hate polls, just... Phrase them better, or add a "none of the above" option, geez!

I really dislike it when people like you make such general assumptions. Let us take a look at the genre, or in this case demographic, of yaoi. It is a genre for WOMEN, bara is the genre made with men as the target audience. Why on Earth would a regular guy like yaoi?? It makes no sense! Of course the everyday dude would vote one of those two as a "most hated". I voted yaoi as my most hated, as well. Even though this is for women my age, I'm not even going to pick one up. It's basically a shoujo where a large-eyed, (usually) short male has replaced the female lead, so it's not that original anyway.

This is simply a poll asking which is your least favorite genre to read, it's not something that self-righteous losers can use to determine someone's point of view on homosexuality. I personally know a homosexual girl who hates reading yuri because of how "ideal" the coupling seems to her. I guess she's afraid of homosexuals too? FYI, disliking two of the most popular genres of manga, shoujo and shounen, doesn't make you special no.

YOU are my hero laugh! This is exactly my sentiment on yaoi. I was shocked at all the "girl-hating" and, strangely enough, "homosexual-hating" going on in that genre. The domination thing that you mentioned...whew! What's really disturbing is how many titles in the yaoi genre use some form of force to get the uke to go along with the relationship. Amazing that some people who've never read it can so easily call out a flaw in others for disliking it.

Well...I'd say that a site like mangago isn't exactly a good example of a collection of diverse manga. A reader site like manga fox or a download site like manga traders might be a better example of a "butt load" (no pun intended) of manga in one spot. Shounen manga usually tends to be the leader in popularity. I'd venture to say about 80% of the "classic" old-school manga series, the ones that most of the adults here would recognize as one of the greats, is shounen as well.

It would seem this poll was made to spark confrontations and it's succeeded rather well. The obvious fact is, most females will vote for hentai and most males will vote for yaoi/shounen ai. It's not a thing of real life hate in all cases. It's really just a reflection of how successful these manga are with their target audiences and how . Each genre has it's strengths and weaknesses, so the question should really be "which genre do you read the least?"

Hahaha.

I didn't realize there were so many people that don't realize that the BL genre--especially with yaoi, is in itself a form of homophobia. XD (Referring to asmageddon) A lot of yaoi that's made purely for yaoi is just PWP smut, and for the longest time I didn't like it either until I took the time to actually look into good works from the genre, and realized wow--there's a whole bunch of underrated stuff that's actually pretty good! Stay away from Junjou Romantica, and look into Kyuugou, where the men actually look like men! (Not that I don't like BL couples that look like lesbians.) Then I was all good.

I believe SOME of the people who voted against yaoi and yuri were homophobic, but for the most part, I don't think they are. They avoid it, but that doesn't necessarily mean they have anything against gays. It's not a determining factor for homophobia, but the problem isn't that, it's in the phrasing of the question that MAKES it sound like homophobia when it's actually not.

HOWEVER, your statement:
Quote
It's basically a shoujo where a large-eyed, (usually) short male has replaced the female lead, so it's not that original anyway.
is not quite true. Many BL couples (read: not enough) have a dynamic that hetero couples can't express--it's not as simple as just replacing the female. It's about standing on more equal ground, whereas male-female couples are mostly "I'll protect you and look after you", male-male couples have more of a partnership, more like, "we'll fight together", and many of us fujoshi prefer that. I could name many that follow the latter dynamic, and that's how BL should ideally be more about.

I do know what you're talking about, though. There are a lot of crap yaoi out there with writhing, girly and crying uke, and it gets really annoying. The rape is asinine. But the genre is getting better! Sort of. Thanks to mangaka like Yoneda Kou, anyway.

I'm pansexual myself, and I completely understand disliking yuri. Most of them are just running around calling each other oneesans, and the most popular titles like Kashimashi and Strawberry Panic are just horrible. Of course, there are a few exceptions, like Morinaga Milk's Girl Friends, which is a much more realistic depiction, and is much better executed, which is why I can't bring myself to hate the genre entirely. GL has potential. Most of them are just going about it the wrong way.

@Jolly: Exactly! Another thing about women. We act all pure and innocent, but we have sex drives too! As for me, I read hentai. I read hentai since I was 11. Though it's not my favourite, I avoided picking it at all costs because I knew most girls would, and I didn't want to act out of hypocrisy. laugh (It feels so weird now to press the "yes I am over 18" option now when it's actually true.)

Tell those "heterosexual" guys you know jollychick said "they need to stop lying." There's nothing, nothing manly or normal about a heterosexual guy liking to read yaoi. It's not an American thing, it's a dude thing. I don't like eating eel. I'm from the New Orleans and it's not something we normally eat. When I tried it, I decided I didn't like the taste. Does that mean that all the Japanese people who like to eat eel are more comfortable and confident in themselves? That they don't have to conform to the crazy standards we New Orleans folks have, and deny their true selves? No. It just means we like different things. Why is personal preference such a problem? confused

Heterosexual males seem to be the problem right now. You're not allowed to have things you like and don't like. Who cares if what you like to read as entertainment in your private time doesn't agree with what some random person thinks you should be reading, or if you dislike something that someone else thinks is great? Why...it's insulting. Sit down, shut-up and read this yaoi. *mushes copy of Okane ga nai in StaticHD's face* Read it. NOW!!

Two men falling in love is grotesque, reading about it is crap. eyes

Why is it not manly? :X Your definition of "manly" hurts. Ow.

That's like saying that straight male actors aren't manly for acting out gay men. In fact, I think they're more manly in their self-confidence. How they choose to act out of passion for acting, and not care about what people think. The actors both enjoy the roles, and they also get fangirls.

There aren't a lot, but heterosexual fudanshi (male equivalent of fujoshi) do exist.

I don't know why the only fudanshi I've ever encountered are Japanese. It's probably a sub-cultural thing. Sure, Asian countries are a lot less more open-minded, and Japan is no exception, but... Oh boy, Japan. BL is huuuuuge. It still boggles my mind how many male seiyuu that are straight voice for BL roles.

...Oi, isn't that going too far, and far too opinionated? If you have a thing against yaoi, okay, but to generalize it so much.

OH GOD, NO. STAY AWAY FROM OKANE GA NAI.

Wow!

I find that interesting. Most heterosexual men (Northern American men, anyway) find lesbians hot.

I think I know what you mean, though. A lot of my guy friends think that I read BL to fap, which I find insulting since it suggests that I only think with my hormones and not my brain. But I don't understand why they think so, because how can I get off when I'm female, and there are no females involved in what I'm reading? I can't imagine myself getting involved, and I WON'T, either, because that just ruins the point of why I like BL so much.

You're probably 80% heterosexual. In the end you'd probably still prefer boobs and the female figure, so unless you actually fall for a guy, which I highly doubt, it doesn't mean much.
