I think this is exactly what I said in regard to the current poll question about paying for manga on a digital device.

Basically, Jmanga, last time I viewed it, has a somewhat limited library. Looking at it now, it apparently only has 312 series? I could find a broader range in some specific retail outlets, despite the fact that I live in a western country with little interest in manga.

Also, you have to consider 'unofficial' (not-licensed) manga hosting websites offer virtually the exact same service, with a wider variety for free. I also would like to say, in my personal opinion, if I were to purchase manga (which I do) I prefer, and only do so by purchasing a hard copy

In my mind, it was kind of unavoidable that this would happen eventually, I just didn't think it would be so quick

I too did not expect it to be so abrupt. I would've expected it to gradually close down, if anything.

Its sudden closure may likely be attributed to other reasons, not so much the competition from free online reader websites/free scanlation copies.

Even if there is a loss in a company, it doesn't close down all of a sudden one day. Companies usually issue a notice that it's closing down, and gradually do it over a period of time.

I'm speculating some sort of lawsuit or court action that was placed against them, causing them to have to close down so quickly.

Whatever the reason may be, I think they should be given credit for at least trying to provide a service to the public, even if it was quite limited in its availability of titles and a bit restrictive on its usage policy (only allowing readers to read it on their site).

I think it might be because they scanned some series Tokyopop did and charged people to read it. Manga like Animal Academy, Peacemaker Kurogane. There were more but I can't remember it now.

I looked at the preview of the chapters a few months ago and noticed they were the same as the Tokyopop version, translation, font etc. They just changed the front cover and removed anything that would indicate it was from Tokyopop. I think they may have removed those series now though.

That's possible, if they're being charged for copyright issues. But JManga licenses their series, so it's probably not the case.

Then again, JManga licenses it from the Japanese publisher directly, and not the English publisher, so yes, you have a point. Copying is grounds for legal action, even if Tokyopop closed their imprint.

But is the effort worth going all the way for a defunct division of a company to file for copyright? I don't think so.

I guess we'll never know the true reason. But I am about 90% sure that it's not due to losses. If it was, it wouldn't be so sudden.

Defunct? Didn't you hear? Tokyopop's back. (Pending Stu Levy's next whim.)

Oh, didn't notice. I don't keep that up-to-date with publisher companies (only got the JManga news in my e-mail inbox). Glad to hear it's back I guess bigrazz.

I am wondering what will happen to the projects that groups dropped because jmanga picked it up. I wonder if they will start them back up now that jmanga is going away

Well that's entirely at the discretion of the group. You're free to remind groups of the news if you'd like.

I saw this option for JManga customers to save the manga they bought on another site's comments and I thought I should share it:

Those who want to backup the manga they bought on purchased on jmanga to there harddrive before they lose access to them forever download gadwin printscreen. And in fullscreen mode you can capture the manga images using a hotkey at the resolution of you monitor and save them to your hardrive in stream lined manner just uncheck preview images and show notification messages in preferences. Also Set the image to jpeg and set the quality to 100% to save on space without compromising quality over. Shouldn't have to do this in the first place but better then nothing.

I knew it wouldn't last. Its the digital age and not many would pay for each chapter they view unless if it is very cheap. There is also a significant population who are not financially independent so you can count most of those readers out. Best way might be making them legally free to view and relying on ad revenue and payment for those who want print versions. There would be a guarenteed change if someone were to actually do this. Viz might be the one most capable of doing this.

There are many screenshot taking programs that can do the same thing. I personally use puu.sh and just remove the pictures off the web server once I've taken them, since I have the local copy option enabled.

You make a good point. "Why pay for something you can get for free?" is generally what runs through most people's minds. As well, many people under the age of 18 (or the age of majority where they live) cannot actually pay for manga, which makes it more difficult to earn money off of licensed publications.

Your missing one more set of readers. This might be what makes up a vast majority of manga readers. There is a significant number or readers who read just because it is there. They are not hard core manga fans so these readers won't actually go out and buy the manga. Even if publishers completely cut of the free readers they won't make any profit of this number because they will just find something else to do. Publishers have to realize if they want to make some kind of profit or no profit at all from these readers.

Well, you can't deny the fact the scanlation as a whole has seriously affected publication sales for licensee companies. But there's no stopping them, of course.
