I don't know if you would be interested in Josei but the lead in Kimi wa pet is pretty calm and collected most of the time.

Thanks! Though I tried them both and ended up dropping them both.

Well, I see Silent killer mentioned this already, but just.... power through the early installments of AMG (or like you said, skip up to later parts). I actually re-read it once again recently and yes, I'll admit the art and whatnot is very weird in the beginning. The both the art and the setting as a whole evolve quite a bit over time.

And yes, Yukino from Kare Kano pretends to be perfect in the beginning. It is actually the character development afterwards that makes me say she is mature. She doesn't meet the "requirements" straight away, but I'm confident in saying that she is definitely not a "boring girl who has no use in manga and is a waste of space." She is actually quite awesome, most of the time.

Is that so? Thanks, I'll give them a try!

I'm a big fan of Bonnouji that was mentioned before, and while the MC is older than is typical (late 20s) I'm not sure if I'd call anyone involved in that series "mature." That being said you should absolutely read it since the series is fantastic.

Maybe 3-gatsu no Lion, the main female character is very mature although she doesn't get as much facetime as you would get in most Mangas.

You could consider Hori in [m]Horimiya mature[/m] depending on your definition of mature, but it's still a school life series.

The female MC in Natsu no Zenjitsu is mature and older than the male MC.

Horimiya was a nice read, it's quite quiet for a manga, 3-gatsu no lion sounds quite interesting!

Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun has a very rational, independent lead.
Gekka Bijin's MC may be a bit stubborn, but she's very confident and independent.
Bloody Cross. This jaded type may be exactly what you're looking for.
The Tarot Cafe. She's hundreds of years old. I guess you get a bit more mature during that time.
Going by your clarification I would also suggest Teppu, Franken Fran, Carat!, Ice Revolution, and Oresama Teacher.

I spent about a year just going through the tags and looking for good ones like these

I'm sort of reading Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, I read it quite slowly, though you're right, she is a good MC. Your other ones sound interesting too. Though I wouldn't say Mafuyu is particularly mature, but she's definitely one of my favourite MCs

Saver is definately what your after, don't think she breaks down even once....and if she does it was in a mature way XD
Shut hell about as calm and calculative as you get XD only really shows rage and mild curiosity....
Majo there are lots of different female protagonists in this and I'd say most of them are pretty mature.
Kaguya hime the main girl is quite a tomboy and doesn't make a big deal out of things....but there is one girl thats annoying and makes a big deal out of everything -__- your choice XD
Double arts mature about the situation in the manga, romance was slightly blushy but nowhere near as bad as some get...
Shuna no tabi I know nausicaa has already been mentioned but this has a similar female lead in it.
Hatenkou Yuugi mc is mature, especially in the ways you mentioned...she has a 'take it in stride' sort of attitude and is very calculating.
Chihayafuru? I'd say she's pretty strong....again didn't read it all.
Kemono no souja in the beginning she's not at all mature (cos it starts when she's a kid) but we kind of watch her mature which is quite cool.

Plus some others that fit well but didn't have much to say about them, some are sienen's that are relevent so I mentioned them:
Love (lee so young), Nanase, Shirahime-syo, The scarlet chair, Amakusa 1637, Sprite, Japan tengu party illustrated, Golondrina

Thanks! That's quite a bit, I'll go through them all... Shut hell sounds interesting, but I didn't like Chihayafuru... the plot was a bit of a bore for me. Saver I've heard a lot of times, now I really should give it a try!

Both female and male leads in 14-sai no Koi and Game Over (MIZUTANI Fuka) are mature for their age. Well, the female lead in the latter is quite a bit older than her love interest - but that's what makes it sweet.
