Recently I've been re-reading one of my favorite mangas - Maison Ikkoku and I wondered about other similar works - with quirky characters and not too much emphasis on the drama but on the comedy and day-to-day life of the characters(e.g. no soap operas). Please no harem, yaoi yuri. Any suggestions will be much appreciated

Nothing beats those classics. I highly doubt you will find any manga now a days as entertaining as Maison Ikkoku except those made around same time as Maison Ikkoku. My best suggestion is look up titles by TAKAHASHI Rumiko.
