I don't really know much about the topic. From what I've seen it looked like a big scandal. I was just wondering what you guys think about it.

Watch the South Park episode "Trapped in the Closet." That pretty much explains Scientology.

The whole "religion" of Scientology is an extremely contraversial issue for a number of reasons. The concept of the religion isn't necessarily bad, it states that fundamentally all people are good, and it focuses around dealing with a lot of problems such as ethics and education). The real problems arise when you start looking into the religion's past, and some of their beliefs for dealing with people who they feel interfere in their affairs. I think its easier to break a brief overview of why they are controversial into parts.

Questionable Motives for Founding the Religion
This point can be summarized pretty damn simply, not only does the church make money off of the religion, its founder L. Ron Hubbard was a science fiction author that had been quoted in saying that he had considered starting a religion for personal profit prior to the foundation of scientology

Large Scale Illegal Operations
In the 70's Scientology was responsible for two illegal operations, Operation Snow White and Operation Freakout. Operation Snow White involved breaking to government offices and embassies to steal documents that presented either the religion or its founder in an unfavourable light. It remains the single largest infiltration of the U.S. government (least publically . .) with over 5,000 agents (most if not all church members). Operation Freakout's goal was to get the author Paulette Copper (author of the book The Scandal of Scientology) either arrested or committed to a mental institution. The plan was carried out by a barrage of lawsuits, and other general harassment (it was only uncovered after the government began an investigation of the church due to Operation Snow White).

Questionable Medical Practices
Not only does scientology state that psychiatry and psychology are destructive and abusive practices (I'm sure that you can see why that could be an issue), it is also responsible for the death of one of its members due to its views on medical practices. Lisa McPherson died in 1995 while under the care of a branch of the church of scientology. It's easier to summarize what the church did wrong by telling you the charges that were pressed: abuse and/or neglect of a disabled adult and practicing medicine without a license (to much questionable crap about the coroner report and the church of Scientology's response to it to say more than that)

Fair Game Policy
The concept of "fair game" in the church of scientology is that any person or organization who is deemed to interfere with the activities of the church are "fair game" for retaliation, and they are not protected by the laws, ethics or morals of a scientologist. Although this practice was officially cancelled 2 years after it was implemented, and the founder has said that it was never meant to authorize harassment, this sort of behaviour has not stopped. Not only have ex-scientologists who held senior management positions stated that they witnessed "fair game" tactics being used (as late as 1994, their claims were not conformed though), but journalists such as John Sweeney who have criticized Scientology have reported being harassed (hotel being broken into, spied on and "chased around L.A. by sinister looking strangers")(2007).

My Thoughts
While it is easy to say that Scientology is a wacked out, clearly fake religion that performs many illegal acts, I feel this is at heart wrong. It is important to realize that most of the outright illegal stuff they were directly involved with was back in the 70's, and that even then most of the moral and ethically questionable acts they took (including the illegal ones) were all focused on either protecting or supporting a positive image of the religion (mind you in no way am I saying what they did is right). The whole religion comes off as being far to introverted for its own good which is why it can almost come off as a large cult at times. If the church makes money off its followers isn't really a big issue for me, its the church’s core beliefs, how they treat their members, and how their members behave which are the important things. In general I feel that if Scientology can make you happy, then I'm happy for you because at heart I feel it might have some good teachings (I haven’t studied their teachings so not completely sure myself), but the whole religion will have a fundamental problem until people view it as an official religion, oh and they can cut down on the whole overly aggressive and easily offended members (mind you, do you think Christianity would do well if it didn't have so many followers, and people thought you probably a brainless idiot for following it?).

PS: LONGEST POST EVER DAMN!!!
PSS: Ok I made NO mention of the financial workings of the church, but as I said before that’s not what worries me.
PSSS: Oh, and I left out a bit of info about recent events involving scientology trying to get search engines like Google and Yahoo to omit webpages that criticize scientology, I figured the post was already long enough
PSSSS: I always wanted to have 4 S's!

Bah, details details. Scientology's teachings were deverived in 1952 as a sucsessor to L. Ron Hubbard's (the founders) earlier self help system, and
the first church of scientology was estblished in 1953. (This was meant more to be a listing of valid reasons behind why scientology is widely discredited and shunned by many nations, minus their final affairs)

No one else thought it interesting that Scientology was responsable for the single largest infultration of the U.S. goverment?

Fact, for the most part. The numbers are true, but remember really what that means is its the largest single DISCOVERED infiltration of the U.S. government. I seriously doubt anybody else who would perform an operation of this scale would be so incompetent as to have a list of all 136 places they stole from on one document, basically linking all of the thefts together.

Edit: please dont kill me for outside links, but http://www.time.com/time/printout/0,8816,951938,00.html is an article contraining the facts of the thingy, or wikipedia . . frankly wikipedia even sources that page as a refrence for these numbers anyways
