Hi everyone,

I'm looking for recommendations for a gift for my step-daughter. She is 14, so nothing too mature please!

I'd like something with a fantasy twist but that's not essential. What is essential is that the female characters are not sexualized or really "weak" or passive. And that it's not about romance.

Nothing with sexually aggessive males please, I bought Alice in the Country of Hearts Vol. 1 and reading it before I gave it to her, found that all the guys were constantly hitting on Alice, were kind of bullies and there was one very sexually suggestive part. I decided not to give my step-daughter that one! eek

Extra info: She likes manga and likes the fantasy genre in all styles, including Lord of the Rings.

I'd really appreciate your help, thanks!

I am around that age myself, so let's see if I can't get you something fun for her to read. smile

Most of what I read are romances and shoujo stuff, and some of it is a little mature, but I have read some fantasy that is not so focused on romance and with minimal maturity levels. A lot of manga does have some small amount of suggestive material though, so you may not be able to get something exactly what you're looking for.

If she's seen LOTR, I assume a bit of violence is all right. In that case, I can suggest some that may have females with slightly overly large... *ahem* accoutrements, though without remembering any sexual scenes in particular.

Shirogane no Karasu I read a little while back and thought it similar to Fairy Tail. I do not remember any suggestive scenes, though a bit of violence... please forgive me if I am mistaken. :/ In any case, you can find places to read them online before buying them for your step-daughter.
Immortal Rain Is somewhat violent, but I really enjoyed it. It's fantasy and has a bit of romance, but the female lead is by no means weak. Romance is not the focal point. I gave this one a score of perfect ten.
I-Revo is not fantasy and I believe is romance, but it's about ice-skating and one of the few I read that was really interesting. I enjoyed that one thoroughly and do not believe there is much that could be considered objectionable, though I'm sure one or two scenes in every manga will be a little more than you would have liked. It's happened to me many times before. :/
Fullmetal Alchemist has a lot of violence. But it was very interesting, though I prefer FMA Brotherhood.

Try looking at some of these -- I will try to find more later and add them when I do. ^_^

Edit:
I believe what you are looking for is shounen (a label meaning 'boy', generally manga with more action, written for teenage boys), which will have some violence depending on the manga but should have little to no romance or things of *that* nature.
Obviously there are the popular Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, and Fullmetal Alchemist, etc., which are all violent in their own way, with excessive blood loss but not going much further than that, with the exception of Fullmetal Alchemist.
There's Game x Rush, which is a mystery with some action, and I don't believe there is anything very objectionable in it, although I read it a long time ago.

It's really difficult to choose a manga with a heroine in that age bracket without any romance whatsoever. They exist, but mostly in the slice-of-life genre, rather than fantasy. So, the below fantasy recommendations will most likely have some aspect of romance, though they aren't the main focus.

Akagami no Shirayukihime An adventure, fantasy romance. Shirayuki is a fairly strong and independent character in her own right, and she does a whole bunch of great things on her own. There is quite a bit of romance, though, but it's the really, really sweet and innocent variety. (You could try one of Akizuki Sorata's oneshots beforehand to get a taste. She's usually pretty good at writing nice females.)

Akatsuki no Yona Yona starts out a bit weak-willed but she really grows as a character as the story progresses. It's a fantasy, adventure. She also has a harem of guys but they all treat her with the respect she deserves, I think. There's also probably going to be romance later on, but six volumes in and it hasn't surfaced yet, so...

Aqua / Aria Most of the main characters are girls in this one, and it's a really wonderful and beautiful slice-of-life about appreciating the little things that life throws at you. It's fantastic, and I really would recommend it to everyone. It's not really fantasy, though there are some parts that are pretty fantastic. No romance either.

Gisèle Alain A really lovely story about a young girl trying to help others and find her place in life. No romance, really, but also no fantasy either. (It's a historical slice-of-life.) It's also a seinen, and while it's usually pretty kid-friendly, there are a few scenes which might not be, though I doubt your daughter will notice. I remember skimming over all the "adult" stuff I didn't understand back then and had no idea what they meant until much later.

Kieli A fantasy adventure that actually does not have any romance! It's a pretty nice read, with good characters and a good backstory and plot. It's not incredibly good in the way that I would recommend it to everyone, but it is nice for a little diversion, and especially nice if you want a good heroine in a quick adventure series. (The light novels are licensed too, actually, so you can also pick those up if your daughter likes the world in this one or something.)

Otoyomegatari A great manga with strong women and an incredible art style that blows me away every time I read it. There is romance here, though, and it's not really a fantasy, but it's so fantastic that I just have to include it.

Saiunkoku Monogatari Oh man, Saiunkoku Monogatari is great with its portrayal of women, Shuurei in particular. It basically details how the main character Shuurei manages to gain power and authority in a time completely dominated by men. And while there is some romance, it definitely isn't the focus. Shuurei's drive to succeed is definitely the driving force of the plot, and her struggles are infinitely relatable and inspiring.

And, from my experience, Hikawa Kyouko is extremely good at writing nice female characters in a fantasy setting, though all of her works have romance as a plot point as well. Her Kanata Kara is excellent though and really shows that a female doesn't have to be physically strong to be a fantastic character.

Oh, and if you don't mind the girl not being the main character, I would recommend pretty much anything by Shirodaira Kyou. (The females are usually the second main character or a major side character.) He's usually really good about writing decent female characters, in Spiral and Zetsuen no Tempest especially (though the latter has romance).

Also, does this mean you're looking only for licensed manga? If so, then only Kieli, Otoyomegatari, Saiunkoku Monogatari, Kanata Kara, and the works of Shirodaira Kyou would be applicable. (Aqua / Aria have been licensed, but their licensing company went defunct, so.)

I would suggest something but I almost only read romance mangas (the rest being comedy).

@all Bear in mind that he wants to buy a manga so only suggest mangas that are licensed in english.

claymore It is mature, but just so awesome! Strong female leads, fantasy, sword play. What's a lil disemboweling among family, lol.

Am I right that you want basically a non-romantic Fantasy manga with an innocent and strong-willed female lead? That's going to be tough if you want to avoid any romantic possibility.

Have you already tried using the "Advanced Search by Genre"-function?
By excluding any romantic, sexual or otherwise mature tags, but including "Strong-Willed Female Lead" you'll get this list.
Short, isn't it? And I have already made Fantasy optional and choosen both licensed and unlicensed manga.

If you take away the "Strong-Willed Female Lead" tag and include Fantasy and licensed manga, you'll get a broader list. As they are mostly Shounen, it does fit your description. It just lacks female protagonists (except for MIYAZAKI Hayao's Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä).

So you're sure that you don't want any romance at all? Wouldn't it be okay if there was a subtle romance part in the form of a subplot? That way, you'd have more options.

Here are a few recommendations with strong-willed heroines:

Karakuri Odette by SUZUKI Julietta
Light-hearted Science-fiction story about an Android girl and her surroundings who discover together what it means to be human. Contains a small dose of incomplete romance. Completely licensed in English by Tokyopop.

Oresama Teacher by TSUBAKI Izumi
Very entertaining series about a high-school girl with a strong sense of justice. The so-called "romance" is extremely slow, and it is more like admiration rather than love, so you can barely count it. Licensed in English by Viz and still ongoing.

I second Kieli, but I'm not sure if Otoyomegatari matches your step-daughter's tastes. It is very realistic and mostly slice of life which might seem boring to a 14-year-old. Maybe MORI Kaoru's other work Shirley would be better.

xxxHolic - Wise female lead. Supernatural.

Warau Kanoko-sama - very nice character, a strategic type. Not fantasy though.

The following are good too, but aren't licensed in English:

1/2 Prince / 1/2 Prince (Novel) - this one is a light comedy, so not much drama. In the novel, the female protagonist touches upon gender issues and decides to be tough no matter what society says (the manhua doesn't go in depth).

Gokusen - very strong female lead. No fantasy though. Target audience is a bit older - it has sexual references, but they're handled matter-of-factly. Skim the first chapter to see if it's fine.

Subaru - target audience is older, so the tone may be too serious/boring.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind fits almost perfectly, although you should read it first to be sure you don't think it's too dark and/or violent. It was also recently re-released in English in a two volume hardcover edition, which seems to have gotten good reviews wrt print quality...

You could also try Twin Spica - although it's out of print and some volumes are hard to find, Vertical seems to be re-releasing the series in ebook format, so it should be completely available again in the near future...

.

I have that collection. It's big and heavy and beautiful. It retails for about $60, but can be found for around $40 online. It's among the best things I've ever read. Period. All being told. This one is likely your best bet as most anything else worth reading in the breadth of your search parameters is either out of print, hard to find, not completely translated or all three.

Beck Maho is a great character. She's pretty damn awesome. If only there were more female characters like her in manga. I may be going too far in saying this but I think the author did a good job of effectively portraying an ethnically japanese character but was born and raised in the usa, who is now living in Japan. Not fantasy.
Genshiken lots of respectable female leads in this one. It's about as far from fantasy as you can get, being mostly a slice of life series.
Battle Angel Alita and it's sequel seem to fit what you may be looking for. It's meant more or less for the age range you are looking at. Although, it's more cyber-punk than anything else. However it may be very hard to find copies since it's been out of print for several years and since Kodansha hasn't said whether or not they will reprint the original series... mad
good news is they are reprinting Battle Angel Alita: Last Order from the beginning in 3 in 1 sets.
Appleseed A bit more mature. Set in a dystopian future. Sorry. Maybe when she's a bit older...? It's not "zomg sex" but there are some scenes with naked ladies bathing, and some skintight suits, basically a second skin, that leave little to the imagination. I suppose the best way to describe it would be mostly incidental. It's actually quite tame compared to this mangakas other works. Thankfully, that's not the focus since it's not really that kind of series, and everyone is usually walking around in riot gear or full-on mechsuits. Or you know, just regular clothes.
The Twelve Kingdoms the main character starts off rather unimpressive, the payoff is rather worth it. Though technically also out of print, there are still copies out there of this novel series. To get a taste of what it is look up Eugene Woodbury's translation of the series. Sorry I can't link you to it directly.
I second Seirei no Moribito (Novel) I think it's exactly what you are looking for.
Guin Saga (Novel) maybe. The majority of which, understandably, has not been translated into english. And people thought Tolkien was a prolific writer. laugh dead
Bamboo Blade
Skip Beat I know you said no romance, and this one certainly doesn't have romance. It's actually a plot point, since Kyoko is kinda broken in a special way because of a bad relationship. It's actually a comedy.
Scrapped Princess
Most things written by Adachi Mitsuru though the girls in in his stories aren't always the main focus, they are always self-reliant, and passive is usually the last thing they are.
Cardcaptor Sakura You may think it's kiddie stuff, but it's CLAMP. They tell great modern fantasy and this one is worth a look. Also try Magic Knight Rayearth
Hayate x Blade all girl's dueling academy. It's a fun series.
Slayers (Novel) it has an anime. blend of fantasy and comedy.
Excel Saga This one may go over her head. It's got a lot of really dark humor, mostly pertaining to the fact that the two main characters may not be completely mentally sound. Quite neurotic, really.

Now to just step away from manga for a bit.
Legend of Korra has a DVD and bluray set out now as well as the original Avatar series. If you hadn't considered that.
Megatokyo it's been printed into six volumes so far. It's a bit of a reconstruction deconstruction of anime, manga and games with a little drama and some sci-fi thrown in.

These may also help you flesh out your search. Seriously, set a timer or something because tvtropes has a way of sucking you in and all of a sudden you've been glued to your screen for five hours just reading smile

Guys, I am so grateful! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer and put so much thought into it! I really appreciate it.

I'm going to Google all the recommendations you've given me and check them all out.

Again, I really appreciate it. biggrin

Just a little update, I'm going to get some of the Star Wars manga (in a list linked to by Tripitaka) and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, as it was so highly recommended by a number of people.

There are a few others I have still to look into (and there are a few that frankly, I want myself!), but thanks again.
