i was interested in starting the series but i'm unsure what part to start watching. do i start with the very first dr. and work my way forward? or do i start somewhere else?

thanks. and sorry if there is already a thread on this. if you know of it, if you could post the link, i'd greatly appreciate it.

Hello there! I am a big fan of Dr. Who, as you can see by my username. It's a great series and I hope you like it! Well, if you still don't know if you will like it or not, I recommend you to watch the episode Blink, it is a great episode, it doesn't have that much of spoilers and it's a good point to see if you like this... Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey...Stuff!!! haha If you watch it and still don't know if you like it or not, try Vincent and The Doctor, it's a different doctor and very different visual too, maybe you will like this one.

If you are not a big fan of watching random episodes, I recommend you to begin with the Ninth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston. It's a good season, it has some really good historic background, specially the one about World War with "are you my mummy?" phrase. If you don't like the Doctor, it's only one season with that actor and the next Doctor is David Tennant, if you're up to time-space thing, you'll definitely like Tennant. But if even with Tennant you don't like it, try the 11th Doctor Matt Smith, it's a very different visual and it's like a new kind of pace too, it gets more and more crazy and gains more of a fantasy vibe.

Oh, an important detail I forgot to mention: if you are worried about the story, like... not understading everything you are watching because you don't know about what happened in the old series, I think you shouldn't. If you start with the 11th Doctor maybe you won't understand some things, because there are characters related in 11th seasons that appeared in the 10th seasons (River Song, for example, is a important character in both 10th-11th seasons). So, it's better to begin with 9th Doctor, you will understand the story, even without knowing the story beforehand, because sometimes they recap the story of the old series, like what happened with the Time Lords, what are the Daleks and such, since there is a big gap between the old and the new series. But, if you begin with 11th Doctor, there is no "recap", so maybe you will be a bit lost trying to understand how the characters are related! But if you start with 9th Doctor you don't have to worry about "losing a part of the story".

After that, if you love Dr. Who already, you should try the old series. It's great too, but if you start with the first Doctor, you'll probably dislike it, because he isn't very charismatic... But if you are up for the story, try it... But it is also a pretty long way until the new series, so maybe you should try the old one only if you already have some contact with the new one and want to know more of the Doctor's "past".

If you want more tips, maybe some explanations or if anything I said sounded confusing, you can reply me here, I'm willing to help I new DW fan!

I started watching with the 9th doctor and love it, but by far my favorite doctor has to be the 10th. Most people i think will agree with that but it is better to start with the 9th so that you get all the new series

I hope you like it. If you see you like it, then after watching Blink, start with the Ninth Doctor! Don't give up, it's a great series.

Haha. Oh well, if you don't like Rose, we can't do much. You have to jump to season 5 and try it again... If you don't like Amy, then maybe wait for the new doctor? haha

It is hard to get into dr who by starting with the 9th doctor
he looks like Al Bundy...but even more stupid and the show overall was awful when he was in it
stay away from his run as the doctor until you actually like dr who

try random episodes of the 10th dr
awesome episodes would be
the impossible planet
and the follow up episode
the satan pit

What about Martha? She was brilliant. She actually finished the Doctor's sentences occasionally instead of needing everything explained all the time like everyone else. D:
Donna was alright, not great, ended quite.. Er.. Well, interestingly. Can't say more without spoiling the mood of it.

Personally I find it's better to be surprised by anything and everything rather than having bits and pieces mentioned but oh well..

P.S. Poor 9th, he just doesn't get enough love.. u.u'' I rather like him, and his season/series had quite a few good episodes.

Personall ...

I do love Martha and Donna too, but if she finds it boring already, it's better to try the 11th Doctor, it's like a new show... But I recommend David Tennant, he's my favorite doctor, he is so lovely and awesome... But I don't know, he is involved with Rose too, if Rose annoys her that much, it's better to jump Tennant as well.
