I'd like to revive Ennui's project and create a vast list on all educational manga out there. To accomplish this ambitious task, I need your help. Here, I want to discuss in which form the project should be continued.

As we all know, the OP has left MU, and his/her original list cannot be edited anymore. We could make a new thread, copy his/her list and continue in the same way he/she did. However, it would be ineffective to do so because this method depends to much on the OP. Sooner or later we'd encounter exactly the same problem we have now.

Therefore, I suggest we form a group of reliable members who'd be willing to take on the task of listing new suggestions, checking if they are educational or not and categorising them. After doing that, they would send information on each title to one member who would be the OP of the new thread, and he/she would add them to the list. If the new OP left MU somehow, any other member could take his position and therefore guarantee the survival of this project. What do you think about this idea?

Another thing is the list itself. Shall we copy it as it is or change its form, content etc.? Maybe we could also start rating them like Ennui had intended to but didn't realise anymore.

Anyone interested? Please post your opinion.

(In case someone is wondering: I made this thread since my post in the Educational Manga thread wasn't eye-catching enough.)

I am not applying to help out, but I think you could make a Google Drive Spreadsheet where all the titles would be gathered.
You could allow a few people to edit the file, which means that all the titles could be in one place.

Another idea would be creating a GD form that would automatically fill in the spreadsheet. But then everyone could add stuff (not sure if it's possible to have the submissions wait for approval), so the new thread wouldn't really be necessary - you could just post the links in the old one and ask a mod to attach them in the first post.

You can PM me if you need a temporary (freelance) cleaner/redrawer for some project. Especially if it's something with nice art.
Being the lazy person that I am, I'm not likely to accept anything long-term though.

Yes, maybe you can quote the initiating post and then open a new thread, in which suggestions can be made. As for this, it would probably be the best, when there is some kind of "fill in"-form in the first posting marked, like -

* Title of suggestion
* With which aspect of educational topics is the suggestion dealing?
* Reason for recommending it?
... And so on.

I'm not sure, if such a form will work and not be overseen, but seeing often just names being mentioned in the postings here, this might reduce the workload for your group at least somewhat. ^^

It's a good idea generally, but I'd rather keep the whole project on MU to make sure that it remains easily accessible and that it won't lost due to extraneous causes.
An automatical fill-in form would be useful if we adopted the recommendations without checking, that's true, but since they need to be looked up at least once, it wouldn't help much.

As I stated in my original post, I intend to use information from the original thread. However, copying it as it is might prove to be disadvantageous later on. Ennui's post had some gaps and flaws which could be filled, corrected or elsewise improved before adopting the information he/she has gathered.

This would be a good example for a gap in the original post. I'll use your fill-in form gladly as the basic frame for suggestions.

Thanks for your concern, Gradonil_Ral, lolnameless and Yankee-chan! I'm grateful for any form of support.

Hi! I would be willing to help out in this project because i see that it was an extremely smart idea to list educational mangas, and you dont see that often! I could help to find new mangas that are educational as well. Im not sure of what service i could be to you other than that because Im not very good at categorizing or doing charts and things of the such, i'm better at searching for things.

So ill volunteer to help out in any way I can ^__^

Oh, also if you'd like I can actually read some of the manga she had listen to check the content and whether it is actually educational in some way and add information for those who want to know more before reading.

That's great, kanari-chan! Welcome to the project! Now, we're at least two people willing to do the checking and listing, I'm glad.

We should wait a bit before gathering the unedited suggestions from the old thread and checking the listed manga. I didn't want to change that much, either. Just adding a simple rating system and improving the layout; some minor changes, you see. But we can still discuss the details over the PM system.

kanari-chan and I would like to ask for your support. If you cannot or do not want to become a regular member of our group, you can help us out occasionally. Just tell us if the incoming suggestions are educational or not. We'll post our criteria later. We'd gladly welcome any opinion we get.

Have you considered doing this using the category tags?

I've got some spare time. I could probably help review submissions, or at least most of them bigrazz (provided there is some sort of record on MU/batoto etc. or an available scanlation, depending on the depth of the review).

The category tags are helpful to a certain extent, but our ongoing trial-and-error period for finding reliable criteria has shown that you have to read the incoming suggestions in order to determine if and to which extent a manga is educational or not.

Welcome to the forums, orangehairedone! PM sent.

I meant assigning category tags to titles you have identified, to make your finished list searchable and subject to filters.

Example:
"EL: Japanese Culture"
"EL: Astronomy"
"EL: Cooking"

'EL' standing for 'Educational List'.

Something like that. Just a thought.

Good idea. I'm just not sure how to make it work since series on the Educational Lists might overlap with our personal lists. So far, I haven't found a way to add the same manga to several lists. Maybe it would work if we created a joint MU account for the project.

I agree, because there is always a chance, that users prefer searching the database for suggestions, instead of the forums - and the related thread placed somewhere there. Many people seem to use the lists or tags for their searches, and recommendations in the forum are probably only the 2nd or 3rd best way to get the information they want to acquire, considering the time and effort they would have to invest - I guess.

The idea to use a shared (or simply a specific) account might also be good, since that would be a way to avoid clashes or collisions. And, users would get the chance to use a specific & easy to identify contact, when questions arrise, which could be solved easily over private messages or such.
