Guy - I read both. Aside from guro (bleh) I'll basically read any manga if it's worth it.
Quote from WarriorKalia
Funnily enough though, homosexual males generally despise yaoi- it's too unrealistic, and not at all what they look for in their H-manga. Thus why the bara category exists. Men are attracted to other men because of their lack of feminine characteristics... so why would a gay guy want to date a feminine male if they idealize bears?
Eh. Suppose it works the same way with lesbians as well, but I don't hear much complaint about the lack of realism in yuri. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough?
I might not count, having some bisexual tendencies, but it's true. I like yaoi and I read it often (I read all manga often) and I own quite a few, but if the boys are too girlie then it's not even yaoi to me anymore, it's just a manly man with a cry baby useless girl who happens to have a penis (which is sometimes also very questionable.) Bara is my
thing. When they finally start printing that into the mainstream manga I will buy that **** up!
As for yuri it's usually done really well! At least I don't have any complaints. It's like more thought out than most yaoi manga some times. It's not just about the sex but the emotion behind it too! Yuri is definitely more about characterization (not that there isn't good yaoi, just not as much as yuri). I love reading yuri.
