Hey guys!
so I've been looking for good manga for like ever. But it's always the same old thing again and again. So I want something different now. Now that "different" can be defined in many ways. It's your own "different" thing biggrin
Bottom line, what is the most unique manga with a different feeling that you've ever read?

PS. Please avoid romance, ecchi and shoujo genre!

The most "unique" thing I've ever come across is a Korean webtoon about a loser guy whose girlfriend dumps him for a walking, talking, elite cucumber. :S

You said no romance/shoujo though, and I don't get the impression that that series is still being scanlated, so:

Gunka no Baltzar - Military school, but surprisingly interesting. Training, technology, social, politics, economy and more, with a really awesome protagonist. And the funny thing is, you eventually realize that the protagonist isn't really a good guy.

Saint oniisan - Jesus and Buddha taking a vacation on Earth.

Silver Spoon - Agricultural high school. Perhaps not that unique, though there aren't that many stories on agricultural high schools.

Oh and online English comics: Romantically Apocalyptic.

Those are sort of unique-ish, but my actual favorite series aren't necessarily "unique", they just do a number of things damn better than the rest...

Edit: A few more...

Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei - okay, this one is Definitely unique. Just open any chapter and see for yourself. That writing style.

Centaur no Nayami - There's some ecchi in the first chapter but that's about it. The social commentary in this series is one of the parts I found most interesting about it.

Billy Bat - ironically my least favorite work by Naoki Urasawa. This is just plain weird.

There's also the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Umineko no Naku Koro ni series, that have a pretty unique narrative model.

Oh yeah, for anime, see Samurai Champloo and Paranoia Agent.

There is a lot of manga out there that is unique, but not necessarily great IMO. Here are a few that range from decent to good/great. I'm assuming you don't want oneshots but correct me if I'm wrong.

Ketchup Ninja - probably the most different feeling (without being crazy) manga I have read in awhile

Nowhere Boy - you just have to read this one to figure it out

I know what you're talking about when you say 'different feeling' but honestly I think I am manga-jaded because not a whole lot fits that description for me. I think 'refreshing' is more of what I am looking for, rather than unique. Regardless, it will be interesting to see what comes of this thread.

Crimsons - Won't get more unique than this.
Oyasumi Punpun - This is very unique. Has some romance and and ecchi because it's seinen, but you should still read it.

@ Mizura:
Oh wow! Those are some great suggestions you got there.
As for Higurashi, if it's the same as the anime, I'll pass. Creeped me out lol.
I watched Pandora agent as a suggestion my friend made cause I really liked Serial Experiments Lain. I love messed up and psychology stuff!!

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated ^.^

I'm loving that right now! The main protagonist reminds me of Rai from Noblesse cause of his coldness and Light from Death Note cause of his intellegance eyes

Annarasumanara An urban fantasy coming of age story in webtoon form. It's bleak, depressing and absolutely beautiful. There is a lot of metaphor used, and surrealistic elements. The artist does very well in utilizing the given media to its maximum potential. It is tagged as "romance" but it's hardly the focus of the story.

My Girl (SAHARA Mizu), which is by one of my favourite mangaka. It's about a single father and his daughter. It's made me smile and shed tears, which is pretty rare. The story manages to be heartwarming without being over-the-top melodramatic or resorting to cheap cliches. You should definitely look at the mangaka's other works too (Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan, Sukima Shiki, Itsuya-san).

I don't have time to write detailed descriptions, but here are some more recs:
Hoshi no Samidare One of my favourites of all time. If you haven't read it yet...
Kubera Fantasy-adventure webcomic with excellent world building and character development.
The Children's Teacher, Mr. Kwon An ex-gangster moves to the countryside to teach at a rural school with a class of five kids.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun There is technically romance in it, but it is first and foremost a gag manga. And it is absolutely hilarious. Possibly the best 4-koma I've read. It's by the same mangaka of Oresama Teacher, which is shoujo, but also extremely funny if you haven't read it.
Another great one is Seigi no Mikata, a slapstick-style Josei that never fails to make me burst into laughter.

Oh, and I know you said no romance (or shoujo), but I just can't pass up on recommending these:
Ore Monogatari!! (shoujo), Tomodachi no Hanashi (shoujo), Kuragehime (josei), Cheese in the Trap (josei), Six Half (shoujo) and Kami-sama ga Uso o Tsuku. (seinen). All very very very good.

Thank you both. I'll look into them smile

Oh and another thing I forgot to mention. I'd love it if the main protagonist is a guy and not a girl~

Something different.
I guess Coponicus no kokyuu would fit. The art is unique, the setting (circus) and the characters also...And it's dark.
I'm not into yaoi so I dropped it after a short while, but judging from your profile you might like it.

+Anima (shounen)
Otoyomegatari (seinen) - it contains some romance, but not the shoujo type of romance. It's a very beautiful manga.

Are you sure you absolutely don't want any romance/shoujo? Come on, give my suggestion a chance. ^_^
Seishun Kouryakuhon is may be classified as shoujo and have a bit of romance, but the main theme is the friendship between the three high school boys. Very heartwarming.

That said, I know that the next two are considered as popular manga, but I just love both of them, and they can be said to be very different from your typical shounen.
Kuroshitsuji
Pandora Hearts

I do believe that I strayed somewhat from what you actually want, but I hope you like my suggestions regardless. biggrin

I'm seconding Saint Oniisan and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. These would have been my first choices if not already suggested.

Mushishi is different from anything else I've read. The premise is that there are 'mushi', insect-like creatures that have long been in existence, which can adversely though unintentionally affect people. It is episodic, which may be a drawback, and there is only one recurring character, the mushi-master Ginko.

Baby Pop, about a girl who is being raised by her new step-father after the death of her mother. Thankfully, it doesn't go in the direction a lesser author might take. Also by the same mangaka, Candy Life - a different, mature romance, josei.

Do you read YUKI Kaori? I think you would really like her work. It is very dark in tone, full of handsome characters, and lots of subtext. Count Cain / God Child, Angel Sanctuary, Ludwig Kakumei.

Gintama - science fiction, gag humor, historical, parody, with samurais. Screamingly funny one minute, but in the serious arcs, cry I've mostly watched the anime.

Just started watching the anime Gankutsuou, a futuristic retelling of the Count of Monte Cristo. The anime is gorgeous, the Count is magnetic, the story of vengeance is eerie and mysterious. Plus shounen-ai overtones (at least so far). This may become too dark for my taste, but if that is what you like... The manga came after the anime, so I don't know if it captures all that.

Added: I know some people who recommend Doubt (TONOGAI Yoshiki) and Judge (TONOGAI Yoshiki). Not my thing, but sounds like the dark psychological story you're looking for.

@ImaginaryWishes - Thanks for your list. Lots of interesting selections that I hadn't heard of before but will try.

As usual, my answer can't be anything else than Gunslinger Girl.
