How about Kaina - Surugajou Gozen-Jiai? You can read my opinion in comments but in short it is adaptation of interconnected samurai stories by Nanjou Norio ilustrated by Mori Hideki. It holds onto samurai manga/gekiga tradition of Kozure Ookami, Kubikiri Asa and such. Deinitely a worthwhile read.

Are you looking for something to scanlate? How about Ryuu - Ron? It's a martial arts/historical manga. Or Tenchi Meisatsu. It's about astronomy and math ^^.
edit: Bambino! Secondo too, it's the second part of Bambino! which is completely scanlated. It's a very good manga

Here's some of my favourites. Got them all upped, pm me if you want them.
Arion (Greek mythology, there's also anime)
Bakuon Rettou (Bouzouzoku, ch1 scanlated years ago, two new ones few months, not sure if they plan to continue)
Hana no Asukagumi! (shoujo sukeban)
Hitokiri Ryouma (one shot bakumatsu samurai)
Jinmu (Japanese mythology—Himiko, first emperor and other mythical characters)
Oudou no Inu (Meiji era revolutionaries, includes historical characters Takeda Sousaku, Sun Yat-sen, Katsu Kaishuu etc.)
Rebel Sword (Half Japanese, half Turkish goes from Japan to Turkey to look for his missing father and gets involved into guerilla resistance)
Saber Cats (near future gunfights, chinese martial art fights—real stuff, tongbei, taiji etc., no shaolin or acrobatics, Cowboy Bebop, Lupin III feel... kinda)
Wait, what? I thought I had read that but now that I read the description I'm not so sure. I've read Shigurui and another (old, and not very good) manga version, but can't remember this one. Or is the story about the masochist included in this? The one who's body is eventually covered in deep scars and in the end fights his little sister (if I remember correctly)?
EDIT:
Oh, I've got that one upped too.

How about Munakata Kyouju Denkikou and its sequel Munakata Kyouju Ikouroku. It's about a anthropology professor that studies the relationship between folklore or fairy tales and real historical events. Pretty much solving the mysteries behind historical events.
A Lollipop or a Bullet is a psychological manga about two girls who hate each others. Ch 1-9 are already scanlated, but both the scanlation were die and currently there aren't any single group that claiming them.

I think Dead Lock.
But it is Yaoi. It has one release and it was a great start, but the group dropped it because they had to many projects.

What genre are you looking for? If you are looking for a history/seinen, look no more: Ad Astra - Scipio to Hannibal.
It's japanese, non licensed, no group that I'm aware of is claiming it, raw are available.

Zipang Endless Abyss died and I don't remember hearing about anyone else working on this
Over rev! club carisma has basically fallen off the face of the internet and may have life things to take care of. Pretty sure no one is currently working on this.
Kamisama Dolls cxc scans has it on hiatus, and haven't worked on it in over half a year so....
Pumpkin Scissors might be too early to call it abandoned, but it's not looking good.

Ah, I second Bambino Secondo.
Kami no Shizuku is very good (it's an A+ seinen sommelier manga), but Vertical dropped it after the 5th bundle volume. The art is fantastic, it's informational, and interesting.
Life was licensed by Tokyopop, but since they closed, nothing past v9 was translated, which is very unfortunate as this manga is incredibly moving, and very reflective of the terrible bullying in Asian countries (the women and their psychological warfare--it's friggin' terrifying). It's a shoujo/josei manga, but there's not much romantic focus. I was sitting in Book-Off crying my eyes out at v20 when I didn't even understand Japanese. u _u I beeeegggg someone to pick it up.
Pet Shop of Horrors can't be found anywhere anymore, and it's licensed by Tokyopop, too. They completed the printed edition, but I never see them anywhere, ever. It's very rare. (sigh) However, the same author does Genjuu no Seiza which was also dropped halfway. It's really fascinating stuff
