I assume this is not a new thing (since I'm always behind on fashion and stuff) but it was recently featured on some of the newspapers in my country.

I made a little research about it and the fact that young people are going on excessive diets to achieve this "thigh gap" is really saddening.

Sure, you can probably get it by starving yourself half to death but it's more of a structural thing, so you either have it or not.

Some might think that only skinny people can have it but that's not true. I have a thigh gap and I'm not skinny (I'm 165 cm / 5'4 tall and I weight 52 kg / 115 so that's normal)

Believe it or not, I would rather not have one.
I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who are proud of their thigh gap and that's fine, but for those who want to achieve it, please be careful.

So, what do you think about this? Is it a trend that needs to go away, or is it here to stay?

(Sorry about my bad English...)

It's about your thighs not touching each other when you stand biggrin

Yuck, that looks disgusting. In my country the bigger a women's ass is the better, losing even a bit to get that ugly standing is a crime, and that's not my opinion, just a fact.

Heh, then I might make you puke, BlackOrion. I'm naturally thin and I actually own these so-called illusive "thigh gaps". Still I rock my "gaps". I've been mistakened for a teenage model plenty of times, and it's flattering.

But I can totally understand how sickening it might look on someone who's body structure wasn't made for it.

Well, a fad is just a fad, it's ephemeral. It's not new though, look at those "starving" top models and they will have that gap or any skinny person.

It can be easier to achieve a "thigh gap" in some people than with others. Not only is it about diet/how much fat you have, but also about your genetics. Some people store more fat in their stomach region than in their legs (hence bulging stomachs and thin legs...) while others store it in their butts and thighs~ Ex. I have a flat stomach but have a thick thighs and a big ass. My friend, who is the same height but weighs less than me (and has a thigh gap~), has a belly. smile
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Btw, if you were to pick between having your fat stored mostly in your abdomen or your thighs/hips, it would be medically better to have fat stored in your thighs/hips. There is a relationship between abdominal fat/android shape obesity and a higher risk of health problems such as heart attacks and stroke.

Ahahaha sorry. I have a test tomorrow (in the health field), and I just felt the need to apply that knowledge to something lol

Though I would love having smaller thighs (I store much of my fat there lol), I just find the lengths people go through for the thigh gap fad may be a bit obsessive.

It makes your legs look skinny/slim. Also may give the illusion of being taller?? laugh

(Then again...I don't want my thighs to be that skinny...so maybe I'm not the best person to answer that question embarrassed )

When I read "thigh gap" I thought this was about the zettai ryouiki.

Seems stupid to care about something like this.

Same. Never really paid attention to it before.

i think thigh gap is pretty. but then, i'm a lolicon and thigh gap is natural on pre-adolescent, so my opinion cannot really be trusted....

i also notice most manga characters have thigh gap, doesn't matter how big their boobs are, so i guess it's an ideal in japan too.

anyway, one should't force oneself to the extreme. but i think it is bad to condemn and act disgusted to those that want and already achieved this - some of them may have a disease of the mind. it's like having pneumonia or blood clot - why would you jeer people with affliction?

Hah, I actually heard about this fad about two months ago and I've been laughing about it ever since. By what I gather, this is just another made-up definition of supposed female beauty basically used in hen-fights and contests of one-uppance.

In a totally made up figure that will most likely be true anyway, I'd say around 90-95 of the male population don't care about thigh gaps. I'm one of them.

Just another horrible fad. I hope it crawls to a corner and dies. Preferably two weeks ago.

I've never heard of this as being a fad in the US, but I have heard people talking about not wanting their thighs to touch. IMO, a person who obsesses over this probably has body image issues. They might be heading on a path toward anorexia. I mean its normal to care about what your body looks like and how much fat you have, but to obsess over a particular area, and have unrealistic goals about what your body should look like is bad. As others have mentioned before, this "thigh gap" usually has more to do with genetics and where your body stores fat.

Dude, 90-95% of *all* female fashion and "standards of beauty" are just made up by women for other women.

For example, most guys *hate* when women wear what most consider a "standard" amount of makeup. Personally, I prefer none at all, but most guys get turned off by anything more than a thin layer of blush. Unless you're cosplaying something in particular, painted-on eyebrows or fake eyelashes or lipstick or mascara are all just gross.

Of course, my opinion on thigh gaps in particular will be completely irrelevant, as I'm in the minority in the US as to what I consider attractive: I love *big* girls. Like, if you've heard of it, ssbbws. 300lb+. I don't just want no thigh gap, I want your thighs to be rubbing together for every inch of your stride. And I recognize that this makes me weird.
