I tried looking for a thread like this, but could find one. Here's the topic.
What are you're cures for when you're sick?

Please don't be a smartie pants and say something like I go to the doctor or something along those lines. I mean more for minor issues like headaches, stomachaches, hangover, blisters, blemishes on your face etc.
I would prefer avoiding emotionally sick related posts as that can potentially spiral off topic, or be a new one altogether.
Oh also if you could say something other than ' I take an aspire when I have a headache ' .
I'm looking forwards to the new and odd things everyone tries.

I'll start- When I have a headache I go to sleep. An hour or so later I feel refreshed and the headache is gone. What do I do if I can't go to sleep. I just rub my temples on my forehead (that's the right way to phrase that right?) with my index and middle finger. Or I'll just wet my forehead a bit with some cool water.

"Rub my temples". Between sphenoid and temporal bones. Forehead is separate. (okay, I had to google sphenoid bone?I didn't really remember that from the top of my head)

Sleep is good. Not just for headaches but for most everything, really. When I feel sick I sleep and then I'm healed. Though it's a rare occasion that I'm sick. Well they do say "baka wa kaze hikanai". I guess it's true.

Another thing is hydration. Drink drink drink. That doesn't include black tea, coffee, energy drinks, alcohol or anything else dehydrating obviously. Speaking of alcohol, when I've trouble digesting (very rarely) I drink a little strong alcohol. Clear is best. It helps for many other stuff too. But only a little. A lot and you get dehydrated and your immunity system weakens and whatnot.

There are a lot of herb stuff and such that I've forgotten and wouldn't know the English names anyway. Some not regional stuff would be garlic and honey that are good when you're sick. Old tricks, but newer studies have shown them to have antimicrobial qualities. Good natural alternative for antibiotics. They are pretty effective though. For example eating a lot of garlic makes you feel sick. As if you were on antibiotic. No wait, what?

That reminds me, if I remember correctly... you can make lotion from resin that's good for rash and burns.

When I get a cut I sometimes recite a spell that stops the bleeding. The effectiveness of it is debatable though. Perhaps I've just no talent for witchcraft.

-> be sick
-> make cup of tea
-> turn on episodes of trashy anime (i use naruto in such cases)
-> lie down in bed, drink tea
-> fall asleep because sick and bored because anime is trash
-> profit

Works like a charm for me.

The only type of headache I get is extreme stress headache. Can't do anything but chew painkillers like it's candy when I do get it. Before I get it I will feel it slightly. To prevent it from going further I sleep a lot more and relax when I don't sleep, also I drink some more water than normal.
To prevent it from even showing up slightly I try not to get too stressed, irritated or angry about some things. laugh

I rarely have stomachache. In fact, I was food poisoned earlier this week. I just had a bit of stomachache, the rest that was food poisoned with me was cringing in pain while fighting over the toilet. biggrin
As for what I do when I have stomachache... I guess I eat yogurt and drink lots of bilberry soup. In fact, bilberry soup is something I always have when having a cold or a flu or whatever. Specially good if you have a sore throat because of a cold as it has a lot of antioxidants and so on in it as well as being easy on your throat. Also, I drink warm milk with honey and sometimes garlic and/or ginger in it.
Perhaps that's the reason a flu last for less than 3 days and colds almost nonexistent. smile

For any wounds, blisters etc I usually just wash it with warm water and put a band-aid on it. For blisters I also puncture them and clean them up. If there's a lot of blisters like under my feet I use bandages instead of band-aids. For mosquito bites I use yarrow growing pretty much anywhere that have dirt. I just rub the flowers on the bite and the itching is nonexistent. Yarrow also works for open wounds apparently but I've never tried it.
As for sprains and other non-wound damages I use Tiger Balm and bandages.

When I feel like I'm going to have a cold I drink hot honey lemon tea, take a lot of vitamin C, try to keep warm and sleep a lot. Sometimes I make onion garlic syrup (just put some onion, chopped garlic and honey in a jar and keep it in room temperature for a few days, then strain and keep in the fridge) - it smells awful, but really works.

That's interesting. I like bilberries, but I've never thought of making soup out of them. Is it something like this soup?

That one looks awfully thick. Well, I guess that's the Icelandic version or it's just the picture looking odd. The one I'm used to is called Blåbärssoppa and is thinner (think blood in consistency) than the one you linked to but otherwise pretty much the same. smile

If I'm not mistaken that's kissel, not soup. What do you use bilberries for then?

I try to sleep off headaches or take Citramon P.
Same drug for when I start having cold symptoms.

Any minor cuts and the like I cover with generous amounts of hand sanitizer gel.

For stomach aches, from which I unfortunately suffer pretty often, I take a daily pill of probiotics, or for when it gets really bad - coal tablets. If all fails, I turn to the stronger meds.
I also find drinking soda water more soothing when my stomach's upset or if I'm sick in general, as opposed to plain water. The soda machine was a good investment. ;p

When my wrists start hurting, which unfortunately also happens way too often, I rub some ointment on the place and wrap it with an elastic band.

And this is basically it, I think.
Thanks for giving me an opportunity to ponder over what a sickly old woman I feel like sometimes. =_=

Thanks 狂気 for correcting me on the temples thing.
(Which I mean this as an actual thanks, and a 'really? you had to correct me?' , but mostly as a thanks. Now I have a better understanding on how to phrase that.)

After reading some of the post. I remembered what I do when I have a stomachache. I either drink cranberry juice, ginger ale, or a combo of both (50/50 mix).
If I'm feeling sick like I haven't had a proper meal in a while I would eat boiled chicken, white rice ( I think my rice cooker steams it ... well my point is it's not greasy and it's bland biggrin ) , and radishes. (For the radish I just slice it very thinly, add a bit of salt/pepper, and squeeze a lime or two on top.) When plating it's rice, chicken over the rice, and then the radishes with lime juice over everything.

For times when I have a sore throat ... well it's most likely because I'm thirsty and haven't drank much the whole day or couple of days ... so I would drink a glass of chocolate milk. I guess that's more for a dry throat than sore. For a sore throat I would drink a cup of tea. ( Whatever I have says Orange Pekoe & Pekoe cut black tea. I only did a bit of googling, but looks like it's just black tea? ...)

For sore throats into colds, I drink hot honey and lemon and nothing else. Squeeze half a lemon (I use a lemon squeezer cos it works better), pour the lemon juice into a mug, put a generous amount of honey, pour hot water and stir. I usually end up adding more honey if it's still bitter. Works a charm. I can usually get rid of a cold in ~3 days.

If I have a headache, the usual reason is I haven't had enough tea. Drinking a cup solves the problem. I'm addicted to caffeine pretty badly. I'll have a serious headache if I don't have a cup of tea in the morning. If it's not the tea and if I can't afford to take a nap (I have too much work to do atm), I end up ignoring the pain and powering on with what I'm doing. I soon find I forgot I had a headache.

With hangovers, I suffer hangovers pretty badly, especially these past few years, so I don't drink as much as I used to. I basically need the next day to recover. I sleep through most of it. Sleep does wonders for me when I'm feeling hungover and I can't bear eating or drinking anything. Lots of sleep and a refreshing shower does the trick for me.

I have a herbal tea that I make from aniseed for stomach aches. It soothes it. I don't know what it's called in English though. You basically boil water (amount you would have in your mug) with a teaspoon of aniseed in it over the hob and pour it into a mug with a mini strainer on top to catch the seeds. I add honey to it to sweeten it a bit. Tastes wonderful. Sometimes I drink it even when I don't have a stomach ache XD

Would this be what you're talking about?
I think it might be by the way you were talking about it. I remember my mom used that to help out my nephew when he had a stomachache.

Yeah that's the stuff. Tastes really nice. I've always liked it and it usually works pretty well.

In the US, there's cold medicine called "Zicam" that is just a big dose of zinc, and it's usually pretty effective if you take it early on. Another good thing for sore throats and stomach aches is ginger, like ginger tea. I always drink a lot of herbal tea with honey and avoid dairy products. Dairy usually makes congestion worse.
