I am looking for the a large amount of character development.

At the beginning the protagonist should be extremely pathetic and pitiful (not very pitaible) to the point that you (almost) don't want to root for him. The character must improve through a lot of hard work (if it doesn't take much to fix his problems then he probably wasn't that messed up/weak/pathetic to begin with)

Examples:
[Warning: due to the nature of this topic there may be some unintentional, unmarked spoilers. But I actually made this a spoiler for the "tl;dr" people. If it bothers anyone I will get rid of the spoiler warning thing] laugh
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Boys on the Run - Top of the list for pathetic protagonists in my book, although it hasn't been completely scanilated so I'm not sure if he becomes strong (it does seem to be heading in that general direction… probably)
Gantz - This is very much what I mean in the sense that in the beginning the protagonist was a very selfish person who I lacked sympathy for; but in the end he became a good leader.
Green Boy - Though it is a weak-to-strong manga with character development, the main character isn't THAT pathetic initially (that's to say he isn't bullied, considering suicide, or in a life or death situation [yet]). Though not the best example, it works. He has to rely on the girl a lot.
The Breaker - This character goes from pathetic and bullied to strong with the help of his master.
Fly, Daddy, Fly - average salaryman learns to fight for his daughter's sake. The character viewed himself as being athetic for not being able to protect his daughter. His desire for revenge leads him to completely change his way of thinking.
Attaque - Kind of an interesting twist, the protagonist used to be strong but now is pretty pathetic compared to his former self. He, himself isn't bullied but he is unable to do anything in a fight because of his injured hand and he longs to regain a sense of strength, but in the beginning he clearly is struggling to deal with his loss of power and is forced to bow down to those who are stronger than him while hearing to regain his strength.
Gekiryuuchi - Bullied, sucidal boy becomes a street fighter..I think (it's been a while)
Liar Game - The female protagonist is initially very idealistic and naive, but she learns as she plays the liar game. and becomes someone who doesn't foolishly trust everyone
RRR - The protagonist, Ricky, changes from a good-for-nothing, washed-up musician into a great father and boxer
Hajime no Ippo - The titular character has the the strength required to become a boxer from the beginning as a result of helping out at the family business. The reason that he is bullied is not because he lacks physical strength; it is because of his weak attitude. This still works because he was helpless at the beginning even though he didn't lack physical strength (this is even more pathetic in my book)

Feel free to mention anything (on my list or otherwise) that way this thread can be helpful to the people of the future! bigrazz
It would be much appreciated if you would explain your answer smile wink grin

Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru - MC getting bullied by members of the gymnast club, gets saved by a random passer-by and turns awesome and learns karate.

Accel World (Novel) or its manga or anime. I dunno about the anime.

Haruyuki is a fat, bullied, weak willed loser and begins to change after meeting the heroine.

Anatolia Story

Female protagonist is your typical teenage girl who cries and clings a lot and has an annoying tendency to get herself and everybody around her in trouble. But as the story goes on, she learns to become independent and strong, gains followers, new skills, and eventually develops into one of those rare female mains who can actually solve problems on their own. I really loved the character development in this one....would really recommend it to anyone, as long as you don't mind the subtle/not-so-subtle reverse harem aspects of it. bigrazz

Thanks.Eyeshield 21 seems to work. Basically seems like the boy was bullied all his life and protected by his female friend. (only read the first chapter)
Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru definitely works! (I should have thought of that)
From your description, Accel World sounds like a good fit.
In Real the characters don't seem that pathetic to me. (I didn't read much/correct me if I'm wrong).
Anatolia Story sounds like its a different kind of character development, but I welcome more suggestions of this kind as well. smile
Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, yeah, that one is the kind of thing. Though I have not finished either the anime or the manga…so I'm not sure if he actually overcomes his problem without the help of those bullet things. But as there is most certainly character growth its just what I wantedas he is very pathetic at the beginning . thanks

Thanks to everyone who has offered up suggestions so far.

Outside of sports manga, I don't see too many series that had a Pathetic Protagonist becoming greater.

It's usually Side Characters that are like that.

Saiteihen no Otoko MC is a fat, ugly, disgusting loser with a baggage of trauma. You really won't see a more pathetic and vile character anywhere else. He met a girl who has the same name/appearance as his dead childhood crush, and went out with her. She turned out to be some sort of monster who eat "scumbags" and he was forced to help her or else she would eat him.

He won't turn into badass bishie overnight, but his attitude and morality improved tremendously.

edit; noticed that op already have RRR in his list

you might also want to check out Koe no Katachi. The main guy went from bullying a deaf classmate, to being bullied and isolated himself, to having suicidal tendency, to slowly redeeming himself and rebuilding human relationships.

The great thing about this manga is that you witness his descent from this active, overconfident kid to an antisocial,self-hating recluse by nobody's fault but his own, and how he pulled himself together, forgave himself and opened up to other people. And you can see that everyone, not just him, has their own problems, caused by very real reasons, like stress, avoidance of responsibility, overworking, etc...

Ghost Sweeper Mikami a lot of people say there's character development. The protagonist is definitely pathetic at first.
