I have no clue how to use Torrents or IRC channels. Especially when the releases are only available in torrents/channels.

Mostly, I leech mangas from mangahosting sites like mangatraders.com or the download files available in the scanslation group site.

Torrents are even easier than IRC, unless you have to open/forward ports (but there are sites that will walk you through it literally step by step, with pictures even). none

Heck, if an old non-computer person like me can figure out torrents & IRC, the rest of you have no excuse at all! laugh

I know! Shame on me! ;___;

Now I'm confused with the definition between Torrents and IRC channels. I thought IRC channels are channels where manga torrents are available there.

Nope, they're different things. I'll try to explain, but I'm not a computer person & it's getting late... >_>

With torrents, you download a program that runs torrents (I used to use BitTornado, and now use uTorrent, but there are lots of others) and install it. Then you download torrent files for the things you want to download, and when you run the torrent file (double clicking starts it up in the torrent program), it connects you to other people who either have the file you want or are also downloading it, and everyone shares parts until everyone has the file. I like torrents because they let me not be a total leech, without having to do anything other than leave the torrent running after the download is completed.

For IRC, you download the irc program (I've always used mIRC, but there are others) and install it, and then use the program to connect to IRC channels. Once you're in a channel, you can look at fileservers that other users have set up to share files, use the right commands, and download the files directly from the people who are sharing them. Some channels, for example #lurk, are set up so that you don't have to look through individual fileserves - instead you can go to a web page, do a search, and find the command that will allow you to download the file you want.

Both are quite easy once you get the hang of them, though setup can be a pain depending on routers, firewalls, etc.

(If anything I wrote is confusing or just plain wrong, I apologize - I'm doing my best to be coherent but it's 2 am! laugh )

Thank you for clarifying it TofuQueen!! *bows*

Honestly, for the last 45 minutes, I've been trying to follow MU's IRC tutorial and so far I'm stuck on this Stage:

and then, once I get to Lurk (as mentioned in the MU tutorial), I have no clue what I should be doing there.

well, here's a question, I wanted to leech manga releases over a scanslation group IRC channel #Illuminati-Manga@irc.irchighway.net
and I'm so mixed up with the whole Lurk website from the previous MU tutorial. Would you mind helping me out with it. Please. I'm really desperate for that a certain manga release.

As for torrents!!ah! Now I get the differences! I do recall a friend of mine leeching anime using this "Azureus" torrent thing. But it doesnt work in my CPU, I guess I got mixed up between the two definitions. Thanks =D

Yes, camping right now @ irchighway

I love IRC, it's like paradise for manga distro
---------------------

@Hermit

After joining #Illuminati-Manga, notice in the channel topic, they'll provide quick command to get some new releases, just copy those command to get stuff you want.

Eg: type in !Holy42 to get Holyland chapter 42. Notice in the nick list, there're some nicks begin with %, those are usually bots that carry bunch of manga chapters.

If what you find are old chapters, they probably wont be displayed in the channel topic. What you have to do is request to download directly from a bot so you need to know 2 things : Which bot & which chapter. Those info can be found in the group website (go there & looking for XDCC list)

Eg: Bot A have chapter x of manga y. Chapter x gonna be assigned with a number z (it's just a way to sort/arrange files in the bot). Then go to the IRC channel & type in command /msg bot_A_name xdcc get #z to get the chapter you want.

If even the scanlation group doesn't archive the chapter you need (cuz it too old (?)) then #lurk maybe you last hope. Use the same way above to get stuff you want (or you can use fserv in the group channel)

Good luck

Well, how exactly do I get to illuminati manga IRC and how do I register?

As I said earlier, I've followed closely the tutorial and ended up in some random irc..and eventually got registered *with no clue at all*

and then this Lurk thing comes along...
I've tried connecting *honestly, I have no idea what I'm doing* to the Illuminati Irc channel and it kept saying Not connected.

and yea, I've also check out some youtube tutorials on Irc and to be honest, I've never been so lost in the internet in my entire life. none

I've tried my best. I'm sure of that. >__>;;;

Been using since as far back as I can remember (before I even heard of this thing called MSN... which would be about 10 years ago). But then again I've always been sort of a unix geek.

For downloading anime I usually prefer torrent (since it is faster and easier), but for manga and older anime I use (x)dcc. Sadly allot of scanlators use file hosting sites that usually have waiting times/speed limit/download amount limit (i.e. megaupload, depositfiles or rapidshare).

Back to IRC

Never could get used to mIRC though, for some reason I really hate that client... And then I discovered irssi biggrin

One of the mayor advantages of using Irssi is that it runs in the console. Simply run irssi in a screen and connect to all your favorite IRC hubs, close the window and reopen the screen when ever you want (no need to reconnect since it already is). You can even use ssh to open the screen on a different PC.
Combine this with things such as Bitlbee and you never have to wait for a connection to be established. (+ you're always online).
Also, when you are connected to your screen simply open up another tab and run rtorrent (configure it so that it scans a folder for new torrent files). Now you have both IRC and torrent running.
Provided of course that this little setup runs on a dedicated linux server to witch you have access.

Since I no longer have a dedicated linux server and good IRC clients for the mac are rare, I've tried using allot of other clients. Been using Colloquy for about a year now and I must say that it's an annoying client at times but it sort of works (none of the other tried clients came even close to colloquy... in a negative way).

after a few edits I think it's all finally correct now bigrazz

If you can follow these exact instructions, you will find yourself in the channel:

- Open mIRC, close all dialog windows that pop up, only leave the main window open.

- Type "/server irc.irchighway.net" in the only window you can type anything in at the moment in mIRC.

- Wait until the stream of text stops.

- Type "/nick a_name_of_your_choice"

- Type "/join #illuminati-manga"

To register, your nickname, in order to "/join #lurk":
- Type "/nickserv register password_of_your_choice your_real@email.com" and follow the instructions that popped up, in the window labeled as status

Also worth thinking about is that IRC is first a chatting thing, secondly a file distribution/sharing thing.

You can assume that the people with %'s or +'s on their names are bots or whatever, but you'll find yourself in trouble if you're inexperienced and cuss or abuse them somehow, only to find out a real person was there.

I run a mIRC based file server, serving scanlations on irc channels, I've done it on and off for like 5 years now, and I used to have it on the same client I chatted with... sometimes if I'd see a newbie struggling with accessing my server I'd tell them how to do it... because I can see everything you type to me.

Thank you Havoccc! I'll try it now and see how it goes. Again, thanks for the help, Havoccc, Rain1 and Tofuqueen. I really appreciate it.

*will EDIT this post once I've made another attempt in using IRC.. dead

EDITTED:

Oki, I've followed Havoccc's instruction in joining the illuminati-manga part. (I dont want to get mixed up with the whole lurk things, so basically I leave that out for now)

and then I've read Rain1's previous post about how to get access to the chapters.

So, yea, I've typed !Mep4 for the manga chapter that I wanted. Then I saw the Mirc is uploading it. And just now, it said that it has just completed the download.

BUT, my problem now is...where do I find the file that Mirc has downloaded?

again thanks.

The folder can be changed, in the settings. But for your immediate purposes, click the little icon of a folder and magnifying glass in the toolbar at the top of mIRC.
