Hey everyone wanted to see everyones opinion on the old and new series. I was a huge fan of the old one. i liked how kinda dark it was but still fun and adventure. While watching the newer series, I felt a different tone going through the same series though. Just a lot more brighter and happy i guess? Also the soundtrack was awesome in the old one. Whats everoyne elses take?

I agree with you. I guess they tried too hard to cater the series to a younger audience, which in turn made it lose a lot in atmosphere and depth. I could rant all day about how the new version sucks, but that's just my opinion. I know there are lots of people who think it's the greatest anime ever created, so I'll keep it at this.

I liked the old version and I'd prefer it over the new one any day.

The old anime, especially York Shin, is the best arc I've ever seen and it's the reason I got into anime.

The new anime doesn't do much for me. I tried it and didn't like it.

I've never seen the old anime, I was kinda turned off by the fact it had fillers, but I found the new one to be pretty similar to the tone of the manga. Would you guys say that the older one was also similar to the manga?

For anyone who've seen both, would pick the old one.

Better voice acting on Gon, and hisoka, they have more fitting voices for their characters, Specially hisoka, the new one sounds like a smuck,

Art, well if you've seen the old one you will understand that the art on some location is godlike, the new one is plain and very boring, extreamly bright with colours and does not satisfiy my mind on compare with the old one,

Story wise, true a anime and a manga should be 100 % story wise, but the older one is very close to the manga, and i've read the manga and watched the anime. so in my vote goes to the old one

As the one above said, Anyday anywhere i would pick the old one, if you haven't seen the old one,
Well you missed a godlike anime bad for you.

There is something to like in both the new and old. I like the new version because it is covering the new arc but besides that fact the old one just had so much more to it and I definitely preferred it over this reboot. I admit I love the HD in the new one but the series takes some scenes that should have been more dark and grim and make them a little less to that effect.

Although the new version does follow the manga closely there are obvious differences between the reboot and manga in certain scenes and even placement of scenes such as how Gon 1st met Kaito and where they introduce this scene. Fillers in the original anime might have seemed annoying to some people but they didn't seem the least bit out of place in it and did make sense with the flow of the story. They also helped the plot feel less rushed at certain places.

I personally love the scenes where:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Gon took Hisoka's plate during the 3rd stage of the hunter exam because it was dark and you could really feel the suspense however, in the reboot this scene is taken and set to occur in daylight as opposed to the night like in the old one. The events just do not give off the same feel. I loved the fact that the old one really showed the impact of Gon's fear even going as far as to show him dragging himself to a place to rest and throwing up but none of that is shown in the new one.
Another example:
The scene with Gon fighting Hanzo in the reboot doesn't nearly depict as touching a scene as when Gon was getting beat up, his friend's were pissed, and he refused to give up and gave his speech.

I didn't really like the fact that the reboot showed:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Gon, Kurapika, & Leorio pushing the 1st door, at the Zoldyck's property, open together. I preferred the fact that they each opened the door on their own in the original since I felt it showed their resolve more as only one person is supposed to open the door at a time, they are hunters, and Killua can open more then that door on his own. I do realize that they were trying to illustrate teamwork and friendship by having the three friends open the door together but that just shows me how much they were trying to attract a younger audience to watch the show. I also disliked the fact that they took out the sushi making scene in the 2nd part of the hunter exam.

There are so many other examples of this lack of suspense, sadness, excitement, etc and although I've pointed some out that doesn't mean that the reboot lacks in enabling us to feel touched, worried, happy, etc the old version just had a certain feel to it that this one lacks and that really got viewers into it.

Orchid, those are some pretty cool videos. However after watching them, although It's not the same as watching the older anime, I'm not sure I agree with Voodoo, The older anime seems a lot more colorful (again those vids might not all have been representative of the whole show) and I also think I like the newer voice acting.

But now I'm thinking I might go back and watch a few scenes/arcs from the original (I'm not dedicated enough to watch the whole thing bigrazz)

Yeah. I think the voice acting in each version has their own good points. Hisoka's voice in both versions I feel works and the other voices aren't changed too much. I feel they tried to keep the voice differences to a minimum there. People are just overdoing their anger on the fact that the voice actors changed and that they hate the slight differences.

Every now and then I'll go back and watch a certain scene or a couple episodes from an arc of the old Hunter x Hunter since there are some points that I prefer in the older version.

Honestly though the new version is following the manga really well so regardless your watching it the way it was more or less intended to be.
But yeah you might want to go back and see how some of your favorite scenes/episodes compare to the newer version.

I don't blame you for not wanting to watch the whole original series it is long and there are fillers after all. Watching the same think, only portrayed a bit differently, can get annoying too.

the thing is

alot of ppl seem to have grown up with the old HxH anime
so they would of course pick that one over the new
they can list hundred of reason why the old one is better but it is only nostalgia that they go by

i tried to watch the first show back in 99-00 when it was being subed
i did not like it so i had to stop
the art to me at the time felt terrible and did not look at all like the manga
especielly some characters
it looked very childish and bland
the OVAs on the other hand made it look like it should
the OVAs are great

IMO the new series are alot better overall
better voice actors, better visuals and better music

I grew up with the "old" anime. It's one of my favorite anime series. Therefore, when I tried to watch the "new" one, I couldn't stand it. There are a lot of things I don't like about it. Practically everything, but the seiyuu. I didn't watch the Japanese dub in the 90's anime so I have nothing against that aspect.

The number one reason why I do not like the 2011 anime is how Killua looks.(If I had to describe it, I would say he looks loli.) cry

The biggest problem I had with the reboot was that it got rid of virtually every comedy scene. That was a great disappointment.

I also prefer the older series but appreciate what the new one tries to do. It's hard when the older one is among my favorites xD

The old series felt a little darker/grittier with its dull, dark colors versus the new series with bright color and flashy animation. Honestly, I think the bright palette works well for greed island/chimera ant but did not appreciate it as much for the earlier arcs. It does give it a fresh, pretty, new feel to the series that attracts a younger/current audience and brings the series up to date with today's animation standards. Fights are definitely pretty biggrin

The pacing was also slower in the older version (it can be hard to get into the series at first since it was pretty slow), but I loved the fact that I felt more attached to the characters due to the slower pacing. Unfortunately, the new series was a bit too quick in progression at the beginning for my tastes (I feel less attached to any of the characters), but it tries to get to some of the more action-y parts faster that appeals more to the age group they are going for~

Also, I fell in love with the older version's music. It's to the point where I associate some of the songs to Hunter x Hunter. It was hard to not think of hunter x hunter without it :X . The newer series had points in the beginning that I felt had music that was inappropriate for what was going on (sometimes it felt hilarious~). From what I've seen in the Chimera Ant arc, music placement has improved (still find the music forgettable but it does its job) ^_^

Overall, the newer Hunter x Hunter series is very battle shounen. It has less emphasis on themes and characters, while being fast paced and highlighting battles for the younger crowd. It's a different Hunter x Hunter but still enjoyable. Now that it is in a later time slot, the show can be a lil' darker laugh

I think this is a case of "I say to-may-to, you say to-mah-to"; "six-of-one, half a dozen of the other."

I kept hearing about this show, so I watched the new one not knowing there was an old one, and got completely hooked. When I got caught up to the newest episodes, I went back and watched all of the first series, including the OVAs.

I couldn't see that the old one was so much superior to the new one, or even that there were more than minor differences. I prefer the new version of Chrollo's Requiem, it just seemed so much grander. The old version for some reason has Aunt Mito as Gon's mother's sister, but the new one corrects the relationship. The voice actors sound very similar to me. As for the new one being geared to a younger audience, I don't see that either, since the new one is what got me watching, and I'm older than all the rest of you put together (slight exaggeration). Certainly the image quality in the new one is much cleaner.

I just think that whichever you watch first, that's going to be your favorite. When you watch something for the first time, it has a stronger impact than repeat viewings.

^ This

I also watched the first version a couple of years ago and yes, it is a masterpiece. But the new one is in my opinion better solely because it follows the manga better than the old one.

Old animes have this kind of " dark feeling" to it though that are superior the the newer animes. Like Yu yu Hakusho, Inuyasha, FMA (old one) etc etc.
