As suggested by Sapphiresky, we haven't done a similar poll since late 2005 (before we had weekly polls)! Back then, we had these results:

Question: Are you part of a scanlation team?
Choices:
Yes - votes: 486 (14.6%)
I want to be! - votes: 1163 (34.8%)
No - votes: 1691 (50.6%)
There were 3340 total votes.
The poll ended: November 26th 2005

Let's see what happens this time! For me, I used to be a very active proofreader and QCer, but I haven't done anything in the last 5-ish years. College makes you very busy... MU is the only contribution I make to the scene nowadays.

Edit, as Sapphiresky just pointed out to me, we actually did this back in 2009 also:
Question: Do you work in scanlations?
Choices:
Yes, and I love it - votes: 837 (9.3%)
Yes, and I hate my life - votes: 236 (2.6%)
No, but I'd like to - votes: 4430 (49.3%)
No, and I don't want to - votes: 2288 (25.5%)
I used to, but not anymore - votes: 760 (8.5%)
I'm just here to hand out C&Ds - votes: 436 (4.9%)
There were 8987 total votes.
The poll ended: May 2nd 2009

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Aggregate sites (Batoto, MangaHere, MangaFox, MangaReader, etc)
Choices:
I only use them to read manga (100%) - votes: 4936 (40.9%)
I use them more often than not (75%) - votes: 3416 (28.3%)
I use them half the time (50%) - votes: 1190 (9.9%)
I seldom use them (25%) - votes: 1744 (14.4%)
I never use them (0%) - votes: 795 (6.6%)
There were 12081 total votes.
The poll ended: March 14th 2014

Oh, how the world has changed in the last few years, for good or for ill

The "easiest" in terms of qualifications is the proofreader. You just need to be fluent in English. No knowledge of other languages necessary. Though that position tends to fill up pretty quickly.

The next easiest (in terms of qualifications) would be a typesetter/editor. If you have photoshop and know how to use it, great. But even if you don't, you can always download GIMP (free) and learn that way. There's lots of guides online as to how to edit/typeset manga. (My preferred one is Kalendel's Idiots Guide). But even then, I've also seen quite a few groups who are willing to train editors. (Provided you're capable of taking instruction). Just take a look at the recruitment section of the forums, and look for groups that train.

Naturally, if you know another language, especially Japanese/Chinese/Korean/etc, you'll be in slightly more demand. But obviously, you don't just "pick up" a language in a matter of weeks (let alone translate).

Generally, there's a greater emphasis on staff that are committed, irregardless of skill level. I'm kind of a flake... so I just do "freelancing." xD

The Best Of... polls take a lot of effort, hence I only did them once ><

I want to try it out. But I have a poor excuse of a laptop which crashes at the mention of multitasking. Waiting till I buy a new one this year.

I've freelanced maybe 2-3 times at most, so I don't think any of the poll answers work for me.

I want to do editor or typesetter, I've been wanting to take the test. But just a month ago or so my laptop was formatted and I don't have photoshop ever since.. expecting to buy an adobe pack since I need flash and others too just for fun.. (many proofreaders are there already)
But I don't really know the standard of qualified. Do you need to be able to redraw or is there a redrawer? (i guess it depends)

Once, though it's really a misunderstanding at first. I told them I could freelance with no given promise and probably for a short period of time, but they interpreted it as "I will join your group permanently and I will promise a release." But meh, it wasn't too active, just one of those new groups that die within a few weeks, with or without any releases. I did do quite a bit of work, but in the end it got cut off with internet problems on my side if I remember correctly. Group page disappeared before I knew it.

I do want to join a group eventually, if I can find the right place. For now I'm just working on my own when I feel like it. Pro is that there's no rush, and I get to choose whatever manga I want lol. Con is that... there's no one to discuss with when I have a prob with one of the translations, and a lot of work... Tried to create a new group a few times, with a dif sort of concept whereas instead of who's in charge of what manga/chapter, we do the parts we want and keep the pages in cloud, not quite a lot of interest though. Then again, that group, didn't offer me an ounce of help. = = Complained it was too confusing when I tried to put the possibilities on there and let the editors choose... I DID tell them I have no experience in a group. -sigh- Well, it didn't help that I was the only Japanese translator that's for that moment active.

I sure am.
Cleaner/Redrawer. I prefer redrawing to cleaning though. Cleaning gets boring after a while.

Well, most people just download a cracked Photoshop. And yeah, usually you're expected to do at least basic redraws as an editor. But your group of choice should be teaching you, only the really big groups can afford to recruit only people who are skilled already.
