I'm looking for short, self contained stories that are at most 2 volumes long (oneshots are fine). Preferably psychological and/or tragic with an emphasis on the human condition or a similar theme (optional but it would be nice), but slice of life is fine as well. No yaoi or shounen-ai please. I'm willing to try shoujo iff the story is amazing, but any other demographic will do.

Stuff that I enjoyed:
Omoide Emanon
Once Again
Haruka na Machi e
Not Simple
Hotel

Myum-Myum- It's about mob mentality. The world is ending and a new religion pops up saying that if you follow it you are saved. The protagonist is an atheist who witnesses as all the people around him slowly join this cult.
Coo no Sekai- A symbolism heavy story that involves a girl searching for her dead brother in her dreams and slowly finding out things she never knew about him and who he was as a person.
Kiss Wood(longer then you wanted)- A gardner from a dystopian world were plants are slowly going out of fashion falls into a coma after his personal garden burns. He wakes up in the world where dead trees go.
Heptagon- A woman goes back to when she was in middle school with all the knowledge she has as an adult.
YKK(longer then you wanted)- Slice of life about a robot running a coffee shop as the years go by.

Hotarubi no Mori e -the second story is probably the closest to what your looking for, and if you like it they made an anime movie of that story that you can watch

Try this P no Higeki Very pleasant and enjoyable. There are three stories and each chapter is a different story.

Myum Myum and Coo no Sekai were great! Still have to read Heptagon and Suiiki, but those look promising. The rest I've read or is reading currently (taking my time with YKK bigrazz)

I've read the non-seinen ones. Only Utahime within the shoujos looks interesting though, the rest don't seem like something I'd read... A short hook for the shoujos would be nice.

Read the first two long ago and they were awesome. The last one I might try, but the drama + romance is a big turn off.

Been meaning to get to watching the anime. Is the movie better or the manga?

A story by Takahashi Rumiko that actually ends? Hopefully it isn't as bad the endings for the longer series. I honestly don't really like her works, but if it doesn't drag, it might be alright.

the manga is good but it is a one shot so its short, so i would recommend the anime movie because it has more detail and has much more emotion in my opinion. also this manga was one of the first ones the author did so the art isnt as good as some of her later ones, while the anime pretty good art

You could try Reset.
Also Alive.
Both psychological and quite dark. Both really good.
