Edit: Ugh sorry about the title. matsumoto** it got autocorrected

Especially uncivilized planet, one of the best manga I ever read
The surrealism, innocence of main character, grittiness/rawness of reality made it so so beautiful
Other excellent works by jiro: jigoku no alice and wendy

Basically looking for poetic, experimental/avant garde manga with helpless characters against backdrop of harsh reality, surrealism, depth...I also like themes like corruption, mono no aware and unfulfilled dreams
homunculus is also a great example

I haven't read any of your listed manga except Homunculus, but it sounds like Nijigahara Holograph and Oyasumi Punpun are the kind of manga you're looking for - lots of angst, despair and symbolism. Asano Inio is always good for an existential crisis or two. smile

Have you read any works by Koike Keiichi? He's done some works of a psychedelic nature (so closer to Tropical Citron than the series you listed), but he's the closest I can think of to Matsumoto Jiro...

Also, Number Five might work.

I don't think there's a mangaka quite like Matsumoto Jiro.

Marie no Kanaderu Ongaku. Other stuff my him will fit more.
The World Is Mine Same.
Dorohedoro It´s a harsh life and you will like the art.
What about Jisatsutou ?
Battle Royale is very trashy in this version but you should like the R-rated nature .

Might be a long shot, but I was reminded of Aku no Hana.

I second Marie no Kanaderu Ongaku, also.

It might be no news but I just have to mention YAMAMOTO Naoki.
