Sunadokei - exactly what you're looking for, slow (and doesn't have any fillers) love story from kids -> adults

Hm, if you haven't read it already Kodomo no Omocha is one. Also, Oboreru Knife - I definitely recommend this.

Considering there's no actual romance between the two... not really along those lines.

Though my suggestion isn't exactly what TC wants either: Miriam
Before the time skip the girl is a child and the guy a young man, after the time skip she's the age he was before the time skip.

Boku no Hatsukoi o Kimi ni Sasagu - Unsure how sappy it is though, it's definitely a 'soulmate' thing but it has a serious theme.

Kiss, Zekkou, Kiss - I like this one because it gives the point of view of the guy and the girl.
Oshaberi na Jikanwari
Both of these are a bit older.

As another person suggested, Last Game. I love this one

I thought I had read more of these, but looking over my lists I realized that I've read a lot with childhood friends and flashbacks, but only a few where they start as children.

I'd say Gakuen Alice, but it takes a loooong time for them to grow up, and the latter half gets really messy and confusing. It's also not really sappy.
