Boku no Hatsukoi o Kimi ni Sasagu - Unsure how sappy it is though, it's definitely a 'soulmate' thing but it has a serious theme.

I thought I had read more of these, but looking over my lists I realized that I've read a lot with childhood friends and flashbacks, but only a few where they start as children.

I'd say Gakuen Alice, but it takes a loooong time for them to grow up, and the latter half gets really messy and confusing. It's also not really sappy.
