I'm looking for romance manga (preferable shoujo/josei, but shounen is also okay) with a guy, who looks nice at the outside, but has a dark secret and that's why he does not want to get involved with his love interest. Something like Noragami would be great.

could you tell me what you think of Iris Zero (seinen)?
he only keeps from her that he's bullied (partly because of her) though.
and the seinen department is pretty strong on romances.

and since when does he not wanna get involved with hiyori? xD
did I miss something between the parts where he stalks her like permanently and stuff?^^

my brain hurts thinking about more examples, I know there are, but I' currently don't remember, I shall come back later when I attained enlightenment...

I haven't read Noragami, but Coelacanth would probably fit. Maybe The Embalmer, though calling it a dark secret is a bit of a stretch (he's uber-reluctant to get together with the girl though).

Twelve Nights fits pretty well, he is the countries prince but he is in hiding because the current kings mother is trying to kill him and he is trying to start a revolution and that is the reason he does not want to get involved with the girl he likes.

Gakuen Alice should also fit pretty well, don't be discouraged by the cutesy look, its actually a very good series and gets pretty dark later on. but the guy does not want to get involved with her because the school is already blackmailing him with his best friend and little sister and he does not want to put anyone else in danger.

Not OP, but it's more like Yato hides a lot of stuff from her and doesn't want her to find out.

But I guess if you take OP's request literally, Yato technically wouldn't fit because he definitely wants A LOT to do with his love interest. lol.

Kubera fits this, but it's a loooong read till you reach anything resembling a romance... And I don't think it's so much as a dark secret, as a secret from the female lead. A word of caution though:


17-sai, Kiss to Dilemma - Another sorta fit. He plays the puppy but he's really trying to "play the long game" with her. No dark secret.
