I hate the unrealistic kindness & forgivness shown by shonen characters. Otherwise unrealistic is fine but the characters personalty & behaviour should be realistic.

Either realistic or unrealistic are fine, as long as it's "realistic" within its own world meaning no plot holes etc.. I also wouldn't say I hate "unrealistic" behaviour of any of the characters, but that's only as long as they're not acting out of character.

This really depends. If it's supposed to be fantasy based then it doesn't matter. If it's set in a modern time and there is no fantasy aspect with no weird plot twist eg basic girl meets boy school plot, then yeah, a slice of life would be more of a fun read after a certain amount of time. But it really does depend on the plot (people get touchy with different circumstances)

I agree that the question and the answers in this poll are kind of vague. Is realistic = not fantasy? Is Prince of Tennis realistic? On the one hand there is no magic or fantasy elements, but on the other hand some things that happen (e.g. a character playing while blind and such) wouldn't happen in real life.

I answered "as long as it's not over the top" because I generally prefer manga that has something other than plain old "slice of life", but in manga "over the top" often means "chaotic and completely crazy", which I don't like either

Yay my suggestion was picked .... and good thing lambchopsil fixed my typos in the options.
But I'm not sure why some think the options are confusing? oddly phrased?
Seems pretty understandable to me ....
Indifferent for those that just care about how well the story is and don't have a preference on how realistic it is.
Dislike where they want it to be mostly realistic, so like your manga school life type stories. (As most aren't completely realistic but give the impression as if they try to be realistic).
Like for the those that have an element of unrealisticness. For example, being able to sense ghosts, or a bit of magic or something.
Love it, for those that like all the craziness that would never happen in the real world. What comes to mind here would be something like Excel saga or anything else where the laws of physics don't apply.
Hate it, for those that would rather stick to slice of life, or historical or something.
....

I picked "Like it, as long as it's not too over the top" . I rarely like mangas where someone gets punched and flies off into space, but I do enjoy the types of stories that have something made up but still tries to stay realistic, like zombie mangas.

I think the confusion everyone is having is whether the poll is fantasy vs non-fantasy or unrealistic behavior/character development vs realistic behavior/character development.

Agreed I like over the top craziness like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and other stuff like it all I ask is that BOTH character depiction is realistic, and the crazy over the top shit is consistent with how it works. For example stands abilities may get increasingly over the top, but the basics, such as hurt the stand hurt the user. Never change.

In that case this poll could simply have been "How much fantasy do you like in your manga?"

As others have said, "realism" is a very broad term. It can refer to the presence of fantasy/supernatural elements - like what you're referring to - or it can refer to how characters or events progress and develop.

An example I can think that violates the latter definition of realism is Tetsuwan Girl. It's a historical story that portrays women's baseball in post WWII Japan, but the plot devices used - like kidnapping, blackmail, torture, and extreme high-stakes nation-changing gambling that forces the US military to intervene - are so over-the-top that the story doesn't feel realistic and natural anymore.

I see now why there's some confusion, but since it is such a broad term. People could just answer the question in how they interrupted it ...

That was just bad writing, since it break one of rules of story crafting. Plausible within the context of the story.

You're right; it is bad writing... But it is still unrealistic, and therefore can be interpreted to fall within the broad scope of the poll.

PS: What rule is this? I'm curious.

They usually teach that at writing masterclass. Both literature and screenwriting.

And I really think even a mangaka could benefit from the class. Ignoring the outlier, like Naoki Urasawa and the gang. The natural born writers.

Don't care for the phrasing of the question at all since it's only about perception and nothing else - I sincerely hope whoever made this wasn't planning on using it for a paper or whatever (as has been the case in the past) since any data derived from it would be useless.

On the topic of unrealistic manga, though.

I'd say 99% of all romance developed in manga has even less to do with how it works in real life than RomCom-movies, and that says a whooooole lot.

Though I answered, " Like it, as long as it's not too over the top "...

But, I'm actually totally Up for Crazy mangas with Crazy and CooL and BadAss protagonist...^^

What kind of unrealistic? I like it when the world or settings are "unrealistic" as in fantasy, or original. But absolutely hate it when it comes to characters. Unrealistic characters, as in shounen shoujo manga protagonists...
