Since I updated my ipod to ios 8 about a month ago I've been unable to sync music on it. I've done everything and now there is no music on it. Anyway fuck apple, I'm looking for alternatives to an ipod. I want something durable with a a lot of memory. My budget is $250

Hmm, do you need Wi-Fi for streaming services (Spotify, Pandora, etc) and web browsing like you can do with an iPod (Touch) or do you just need a dedicated audio player and nothing more?

If it's the latter, I'd wager the FiiO X1 ($100 US) or X3 (around $200) would equal or better most iDevices in terms of audio quality. Problem is, they've got rather cumbersome user interfaces (compared to what you're used to with iOS) and battery life comes in at only about 10 - 12 hours, depending on file types played.. You should be able to find reviews of them via google, mostly on head-fi.org.

You can probably go cheaper than that if you're not bothered with high-rez flac or wav type files. I know there are some Sony Walkmans under the $100 mark, though I'm not sure how much internal storage those things have. Try Sony's website. If it's just standard 16bit/44.1khz files, then most Walkman models should give you around 20 - 30 hrs in playback time.

For portable music players, $100 - $200 mark is probably the sweet-spot with regards to price-sonics ratio. Above that, law of diminishing returns kicks in and you won't really get a huge step-up in sound (though you might get more features and a better user interface) unless you're combining them with high dynamic-range tracks (not the case with 90% of music) and good headphones.

I don't mind having a dedicated audio player, so thanks for the suggestions

Quote from Jatodude
I haven't been in the market for exclusively audio devices for many years, but I think buying an unlocked Google Nexus 4 would definitely be something to consider. IIRC the build quality was fairly good, and on airplane mode 24/7 it should have killer battery life. It should be running Android 4.4+, ...

No
