Like the title states. Whether they ultimately get back together again or not, I don't care. The requirement is that the process of making this decision is a major plot point.

Some more criteria/requests:
- It cannot be an abusive relationship. I mean, it can be dysfunctional and messy, but I don't want violence or rape-y undertones.
- Female lead must have a backbone
- I'd prefer the characters to be both adults in the present.
- Also I'd prefer infidelity/cheating to not be a reason for their separation.
- Strong friendships are a huge bonus

That's it. Might be too specific, I think. Ah well.

And I'd really appreciate if you could check my lists before recommending anything. Thanks! ^^

I just got finished reading Kimi wa Pet and it seems to match your criteria. The story is focused on a successful career women who takes in a young man living on the street. He fulfills her need for companionship without the difficulties of a romantic relationship. She takes care of him and does not see him as a man.

A major part of the story is her renewed relationship with her college crush. She loves him, but can not relax around him and be herself. The story is very adult and realistic. You would think that this would be a typical love triangle type story, but it isn't. Its hard to compare it to any other story, its very unique.

The only issues might be that the series is rather long with 82 chapters. It is completely scanlated though, so no waiting. I liked the fact that the romantic elements were not focused on attraction and sex, but on companionship. There is a cheating/jealousy element in the story, but its about "emotional" cheating.

By the way, the image I added to my signature is my favorite line from this manga.

You could try Ashita Dorobou. It takes a somewhat supernatural approach to the idea though.
