Could someone recommend/tell me about some fairly recent fantasy movie/s that is not LotR or The Hobbit.

As long as it is fun to watch, I don't really care about much else. Though I would prefer if it isn't an adaptation from a game since those tend to suck REALLY bad. Even if they sometimes ARE fun to watch some are just.. *shudders*... *cough*Uwe Boll*cough*...

And it shouldn't be so unheard of that I won't be able to get hold of it biggrin

lol you're kinda asking for the impossible, because I've never seen a good Fantasy movie produced by Hollywood. Except maybe Lord of the Rings/Hobbit/Harry Potter.

buuuut....have you seen Dracula Untold?

Nope, haven't seen Dracula Untold. Been thinking about it though...

And, yeah. I know it's kind of impossible. If it was easy I wouldn't have had to ask. biggrin
Note that I wasn't asking for a masterpiece or anything. Just something good enough that my evening isn't ruined by watching it.

Looking through my movies the closest I got is some "contemporary fantasy" like Sorceror's Apprentice or Harry-Potter-wannabe Percy Jackson, but I want something more D&D... You know, wizards and warriors running around slaying stuff with weapons that are too big and spells that are too destructive...

...Actually the perfect thing for me right now would be a live-action adaptation of Slayers... hehe... Dragon Slave!! BOOOOOM!!

Not a bad question. We are in a sci-fi/superhero/copy-cat phase right now. There is even a simliar crave list google shows me but that won´t quite help.http://craveonline.com/film/articles/201499-the-top-25-other-best- fantasy-movies-ever-made-part-2#/slide/1.
Watch this very dark 8/10 http://imdb.com/title/tt0082348/ Excalibur from 1981 and maybe the list on the right can help. What about Hellboy ?
I may come back to you as even a movie buff like me is at a loss right now for stuff from the last 3 years or so but everyone wants to be Bilbo after all. Game of Thrones clones should be comming too. I could use a real Dune tv show. We do have a r-rated wave of fanatsy inspired tv right now.

I've seen Hellboy 1 and 2 (waiting for the third) and I think I've seen that Excalibur movie. Seen most of the other movies on that list too. (Might be wrong though... Doesn't really remember all the oooold movies I've seen) Only one problem with them, just thinking of trying to find most of them is giving me a headache.

Same problem with most pre-2000 movies nowadays though. IF you're lucky they get a re-release, but otherwise...

The are 2 good Hellboy cartoons: http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellboy:_Sword_of_Storms. Movie 3 will eather happen now(slim chance) or never at all with the cast we had.
So his comics(over 300 issues) it is for me. What i find funny is that Disney made Thor a science-fantasy. All hail the future/aliens overlords because america just wont get it biggrin .
The wiki list of fantasy films http://wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fantasy_films is not slowing down but i see a lot of trasn in the 10s. Sex and Zen ? Lol. Man of Steel is also under fantasy ? Shure. He is based on Moses a bit but im am shure the admins don´t know that.

What about How to Train Your Dragon for "action-fantasy"? Then i got nothing from the 10s besides anime. Shingeki no Bahamut from last year is a 8,5/10. Big surprise for all.
The fantasy market is realy in the grave right now. You should see what sort of books are flooding the youth market right now. Oh well Hbo´s TitZ and Dragons will come back in 2,5 months. I am ready but this is where the books start to sour a bit and we are catching up now. This list looks good http://imdb.com/list/ls009669258/ for classics. Sorry if wiki can´t help then the market is dead and is waiting to stop sucking again. LotR did ressurect it after all so why not kill it too.
Edit: Star Wars is science -fantasy. There are like 50+ new SW things on the way. Not even a joke but some will be good like the new cartoon.

Hercules, the one that came out last year staring Dwayne Johnson. There was another one too, but I haven't watched it, so I have no idea if its any good.

Hercules isn't a great movie, but it most definitely falls into your request of "fun to watch". It has interesting characters, an actual plot, and best of all, it doesn't take itself too seriously. The fight scenes are delightfully done too.

Do not believe the trailer. It is the most deceitful one I have ever seen. It takes random bits of the movie, including one from a tall tale told about Hercules that you aren't meant to believe, and sets them to dramatic music. In the movie, gods and destiny do not come into it AT ALL.

About Star Wars, would it be at all possible to get my hands on the original trilogy NOT remastered?

Hmm... I do think that I have Hercules somewhere around here and I haven't watched it yet. Guess that's one evening saved then biggrin

(The more I think about it, a live-action adaptation of Slayers could be really fun...)

Type: Star Wars Trilogy (The Original Unaltered Trilogy) with the usual stuff into google and you will get the Laserdisc version of Star Wars with very minimal edits.
The movie won an effects Oscar but the 5+ new version removed a lot of that stuff so they are trash in my eyes. Would you recolour Citizen Kane ?
Read this one: http://slashfilm.com/george-lucas-speaks-altering-films-1988/ to see how OG Lucas spoke to the government to stop relocouring in 1988 but then... Well you know.
Money in the bank.

Actually, with Star Wars, you might just want to wait for a bit. The word is that Disney intends to publish blue-rays of the original versions of Episodes 4 - 6.

One of the positive effects of Lucas selling the rights to the IP.

http://comicbook.com/blog/2014/08/16/exclusive-original-unalte red-cut-of-star-wars-trilogy-to-be-rele/

But live-action Slayers... I do admit that seeing Dragons Slave or Ragna Blade in really pimp CG would be rad, but the amount of slapstick and crazy in Slayers doesn't translate that well to a live screening, methinks.

Umm, so the best movies I could find were more in the "not that bad" category, but who knows, maybe you'll like them...

Forbidden Kingdom: Jackie Chan, Jet Li, kung fu, comedy.
The Brothers Grimm based on Grimms' fairytales, kind of creepy sometimes
Mirrormask a bit to teenager-y for me, but still watchable, interesting visually, also Neil Gaiman.
The Dark Crystal supposedly for kids, but some moments are pretty scary
Stardust well, to me it was crap. But it may not be to someone who hasn't read the book.
I've heard that Big Fish was good, but I haven't watched it yet, so I don't know if it's true.

I haven't found much in the way of movies, either.

Chronicles of Narnia "Witch, Lion & the Wardrobe", etc.
Not exactly rencent, but I second "Dark Crystal" if you haven't seen it.
"Dragonslayer" & "Legend" are a little dated, but decent.

Most of the rest can be kindly called campy fun (Krull, Kull the conquerer, Conan, Red Sonya) or counted in your crap description.

I've found that novels are much kinder to swords & sorcery. The length allows for world building and complexity that are often missing from the two plus hour cinema format.

Seen and read Stardust, thought the book was awesome and the movie was borderline bad... (But the movie has a crossdressing, lightning-capturing Robert de Niro, that's a plus)

Forbidden Kingdom, The Brothers Grimm, the old Conan movies and the Chronicles of Narmia I have seen. Didn't really like the Narnia movies though.

Dragonslayer, Mirrormask and Legend sounds interesting.
I think I had The Dark Crystal on vhs waaaay back. Maybe I got to try and find it again.

Think I got to start reading fantasy again. Haven't really read anything new since the final Inheritance book...

You see what my job is and the fantasy book market is in deep the toilet right now.
Go with Neil Gaiman(or read his comics) or go with Ice and Fire which are a tiny bit better then the show but get problematic in 4/5 because of structure problems and character overload.
