This week's poll was originally suggested by lover-fighter and then improved upon by 狂気. If you've been around for a while, you should at least know what "otaku" means. Do you consider yourself one though?

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Opinion on music in webtoons
Choices:
Awesome! - votes: 1210 (14.9%)
No preference - votes: 2150 (26.4%)
Totally bad idea - votes: 623 (7.7%)
Don't like music while reading - votes: 1308 (16.1%)
I don't listen to music anyways - votes: 270 (3.3%)
I don't read webtoons - votes: 2569 (31.6%)
There were 8130 total votes.
The poll ended: January 17th 2015

Hmm, seems like more of you are against it than for it. Oh well, we all make our own soundtracks. Singing in the shower, anyone?

I am more of a nerd then an Otaku(learned if from MGS btw.) because that scene is a a bit sad in places so: To a certain extent, yes.
I don´t really care for a lot of the culture around anime/manga and i am only highly knowledgeable about it. The Genshiken(the first series only) club would not have been a place for me even if the series is good. I would have liked to discuses script writing and not eroge/harem crap. I am here to read or watch and do more of that that then 99% of the fans i assume. Consumerism, self promote, celebrate of the "birthdays" of moe girl X and worse are 100% not for me. At least i have anime hair to a degree and have some imported posters but that is again an art thing. I can get behind comic culture way more but there we have 50(not a joke)+ variant covers for new issues or maybe the gaming space but there we have t-bagging and "slut shaming" or...
So i will keep my self identity for the time being it seems. It the end i am proud of my hobby(s) and wear that on my sleave(my clothes are 50%+ nerd realed and i wear a Behelit most days around my neck) but i am not them and more then them.
Singing in the shower no thank you btw. my just ruler.

To a certain extent, yes

I've been more into it when I was younger, but I still find the animation and aesthetics of a well made anime (or manga) wonderful and inspiring, and I still love my favourite series and all, but it's hard to find new stuff that I find exciting. So I think, at heart, YES otaku forever, I guess. But practically, seeing as I barely read or watch anything anymore, it would be wrong to vote Absolutely.
And about what is left of my otaku-being, let's say: Yes, but other people aren't aware of it. I don't really want to attract people who are in the depths of their otaku-phase, so I usually only mention it after knowing that people only like anime/manga on a similar degree to mine. (Very casual at the moment)

Ya...I do...At least to a certain extent...To be specific A Geeky Otaku...

though Otakus' aren't supposed to call themselves Otaku...It's something others would do for you...Well, I did it for the Poll ~!

hmm...singing in Shower...I'm not a professional bathroom singer...though I normally take shower/bath 2-3 times daily on summer time and one time daily on winter time...I would say no for winter...but, on summer...If mood calls for it, why not ?!!

As others have said, To a certain extent, yes. I don't go into extremes yet have watched a lot of anime (soon up to 1000 series/movies), played plenty of games in this sub genre and read a little manga.

I never talk about it or let it effect my life outside my spare time though. Most people at work only know about my gaming interest of "normal" games. That is what I choose to share, so nobody knows of my interest. I am not a collector in any way, shape or form either. So I don't consider myself a true Otaku, just somebody that likes anime and manga.

I think i have to consider myself an otaku

I have an unhealthy love for JoJos bizarre adventure
i import shit
i try to get my frind who live in japan to go to JoJo-cons and buy doujins for me... and even try to have my hair as close as i can to whomever is my favorite for the time being lol

everyone i know knows that i love toksatsu shows and manga
coz in some situations where you are forced to meet new ppl
they allways start telling me boring shit i dotn care about
so...then i tell them what i like or did last weekend[watched kamen rider, anime or read manga lol]...often this leads to them not talking to me more
but i dont care
i cant really help it
and i dont really see anything wrong with it

Uh, yeah, I do consider myself an otaku.
A HUGE otaku.
In fact, I haven't gone without anime or manga or games or Jpop for a day the last 15 years so...
...
Yeah, I know that's not something to be proud of... *crawls into a hole*

What makes me feel a little better is that apparently I don't look like one. I've been told I look much more like someone who's into horseback riding or something of the sort. XDD
No one would ever know anything about my hobbies if I didn't tell them.

But it's not like I'm trying to keep it a secret; my room is FULL of all kinds of anime merchandise, so much manga that I'm running out of space, huge collection of plus toys and everything you can imagine : D

I'm too much of an otaku to call myself an otaku. I will admit I enjoy anime/manga to an unhealthy degree, to the point I dislike calling myself one because of the connotations of the word in Japan.

People consider me to be an otaku but I really don't see myself as one. Maybe I'm in denial? Haha. laugh

I don't know. I mean, I read a lot in general, so my manga consumption would need to be put in perspective.

On one hand, I have currently over 800 manga on my "completed" list here. But that's over a period of 6 years and some of those are oneshots.
But on the other hand, I have no idea how many books I've read in that time. I do remember a point in time though when I checked my calibre library and found out that I had read a book per day on average for an entire year (at which point I decided to tone it down).
I'd guess at the moment the ratio between books and manga is about 50/50.

But I rarely watch anime or play VNs (I was about to say no J-Pop at all, but then I remembered that I'd extracted the opening theme of RahXephon into my mp3 player once). As in, months can pass without either happening and then mostly just one series partly or just one, maybe two playthroughs. So, not much of a typical otaku.
Maybe a reading otaku? But that sounds like I'm obsessed with the act of reading. A stories otaku? Don't collect anything though. I keep lists to avoid accidentially re-reading something I'd already read, especially bad stuff, but mostly it's read-and-discard.

Then again, I know quite a bit about manga and japanese culture by now that you normally wouldn't expect in a non-otaku.

Hm, there needs to be an option "no, but maybe others might".

No no and no. Otaku are the reason why the manga and anime industry have gone downhill.

TKS and the lack of upvotes for "absolutely" have a point buck that opinion is as old as me at least. Otaku may have (and had if you look up "The Otaku Murderer" from the 80s) some of the worst PR ever but the problem lies deeper. It is even a bad word to some extend !
I personally think that to be a true Otaku one needs to be sexual interested in the medium and that is a problem. Even the lovely Otaku no Video from 1991 addresses my opinion. It´s character designer is funny enough a porn artist too so the problematic was there decades ago. Does anyone disagree ?
@TKS The manga industry is doing ok if you as me but he anime industry is overstretched and very tired even if signs of improvements can be seen.

Depends on which definition you're talking about here
The Japanese one: no
The Western/American one: yes

To a certain extent, yes. I do admit that I'm a closet fangirl.
