Personally, I find the site really easy to use. A bit bland on design, there's some problem here and there, but I get used to it. But then again I had never used MAL before, so I can't compare the experience. I agree on user CP being hard to find at first, especially edit profile menu.I need to search around one or two times before remember that it was on members - user CP. The rest work just fine.

Topic aside, I really do suggest changing the title to a more neutral one, and or providing tl;dr for people who want to listen to your point, but not the rant.

I'm sorry, but you are. And it's not even because I disagree.

One of the reasons I like MU is the functionality and ease of use.
Sure, things could be better, smoother, but I think it's far from what you're describing.
Before finding MU I was active on forums like the evil empire, animeNFO and various random sites. I found them cumbersome and unfriendly. But then I discovered MU and abandoned the rest.
After a while, I found myanimelist, too. In my opinion, it has no superior merits, and in fact I found its layout uninviting.

We (you) can bicker and moan about aesthetics and functionality, but in the end, many people seem to like it, me included. And as a moderator, but more importantly, a long time user, I find your whole post uncouth and offensive. I don't take this offence to heart, but nonetheless, your whiny attitude is unwelcome.

Oh, and by the way... Rants are against the rules here.
You want to offer criticism and make suggestions to make the user experience better? Sure, go ahead.
But if you can't word your opinions is a way that doesn't make you sound like a talking fart, then I wish you all the best in continuing to enjoy the sites you hate so much.

I do agree that MU looks "uninviting", but how long does it take to get used to this site? 2 hours? The design may be flawed, but it's super simple to use, just what I'd want and expect from such a site.

Honestly, I prefer it this way, as there is no need associate with people who are simple enough to find this site "needlessly complicated."

Sure, there is a bit of a learning curve and actually reading the rules before posting would be nice, but this site is, at the end, quite easy to use for any and all functions I've ever desired out of it. I've never even tried using MAL due to its overtly flashy look. I prefer the more subdued theme MU has going on.

I'd also like to point out that you are a straight up liar, since is very much untrue. Well over 50% of your post is whining and ragging on MU, not MAL.

I really don't see what you were hoping to achieve with this post, beside essentially stating that you will stay a MAL-user for the foreseeable future, because reasons. Which is also your first post at MU.... Welcome to the forums?

MU functions pretty well if you spend a few hours trying out stuff and play with your User CP.
I don´t know a better database for translated manga even with all it´s warts and all.
My biggest gripe are the somewhat weird search results the search function presents me at times but it´s flaws can be circumnavigated quickly. Myanimelist is kind off a mess if you ask me so i never signed up. Oh well.
My database at work is just hell btw. but is widely used by libraries so you never know.
The way my colleagues tag is just . Twilight is a horror novel, The Hunger Games are now a fantasy and Blade of the Immortal is a children's comic. How nice. Barefoot Gen though is in the adult history section cuz logic! Be glad with what you have here.

addressing your points: (that I remember anyway)

the sub-header MEMBERS tells you that those links are not related to Manga and don't seem to be.
I don't really understand why you're upset about the boldness...? I didn't even really notice.
forcing 3 more buttons to the top would look cluttered and painful. I'm sorry that you, who likes MAL, cannot stand side navigation or this layout; but those who use MU are alright with it.

the idea of 'because I like some other forum better, yours sucks and you should give up and join theirs' seems a bit crazy.
this is the only form module that I've ever seen that allows you to see what's been posted recently; "News"
this makes the 'I'm looking for...' category really useful as people will notice right away, and answer promptly. If they imported some pre-made form functionality, I doubt they'd be able to query for recent posts, thus that aspect would go away.

the form surround instead of insert thing is a good suggestion. That should have been your post, honestly. I'm not sure if it's possible to implement though~

or you could have requested an importer for MAL lists.
the importer for MU is only set to accept MU exports right now; as in names separated by tab/return characters. computers are not a magical device and all websites do not implicitly understand each other; Integration between sites can be difficult and MU isn't paying much attention to it.

it's just as valid to require MAL to export their lists as names separated by return characters as it is to require MU to parse MAL's XML schema and map it to it's own columns. BTW the fixing of the export would be easier. so go bug their forums about it.

TLDR;
good lord just quit using it and go back to your cruddy MAL. No one cares if you and your friends think MAL's UI is better. if you don't have something constructive to suggest, keep it to your self.

I understand you have several concern about this site, however i do not think it will change in the foreseeable future. Mu is best being plain but informative.


I had visit mal several times, however the bright colors is not really pleasing. It is also not as easy finding stuff there. I think everything is very neat here with everything on one side , unlike mal. The issue you have with manga search, its actually meaning just that box, not the whole column.

The search engine is also vastly superior where you can find the most obscure kink you have, and knowing whether its scanlated or not. If you want to find gore, scat, shota and nipple play in one manga, that's scanlated, its just opting them all in advanced search. I cannot even find the search page in Mal.

About the form, i do not know whether its really better or not there. I do find clicking two times is quite tedious especially for large rec though.

i also agree with you more people should use mu. However i think very dedicated manga reader will come to fall in love with m eventually since its so easy to find any manga, and so easy to jot down every manga you read down to specific chapter. When you juggled so much manga, you will love what all mu have to offer.

you don't need to transfer everything from mal, just start from scratch here! Every time you fond something you had read just mark them as completed. overtime, your compendia will be complete.

This is where I stopped reading ybnrmalatall's post and scrolled to the replies. If you don't care about what I say, then I certainly don't care about what you say. Lucky for me, NightSwan probably said most of what I was going to say, had I read your post.

Anyway, I gather that this person can't navigate this site and/or it doesn't conform to their aesthetic pallet and is posting in an obnoxious, bratty way? That's strange. I always thought it was overly simplistic. I also thought it was more of a design choice being that this was a database.


There are some funny things about this site, though. And by that, I mean there's certain parts of it that are just outright ignored. Anyone ever click on the Affiliates button? I just did, and I clicked on one of the links. It was a scanlation group that, surprisingly enough, still had their site up and running despite their last update being from 2008. Also, a link to a scanlation group? I thought this site had to remove all links to group pages? Shouldn't those be removed?

Another link lead me to a page that spam attacked my computer with pop-up ads. Swell.

Did you know there's a place where you can write a review for manga? Yeah, the comments section of the manga's info page, where you can leave a comment and a 1 to 10 rating, right? No! There's a 'Reviews' tab where you can actually write a "formal" review, and what's odd is that the scoring there is broken down into five different categories including 'Overall Rating', and they're all 1 out of 5 instead of 1 out of 10. Does anyone even use this? (a quick glance at it tells me 'yes'...but barely)

These things are just oddities though; they're not good or bad. They're just... there, I guess, and I'm just rambling to fill space, since I can't comment on a post I refuse to read.

Long story short, if you can't navigate this site, yet can navigate another site that offers the same or similar services, then use that site. Why do I even have to tell you something this obvious?

To be honest I think MU is a good site for Manga because of it's simplicity. Fancy designs and sUpEr aDvAncEd forums aren't always the best.
