Good news for fans of the '80s anime series Robotech: it looks like it might finally be getting a live-action adaptation courtesy of the team that brought us 300 and its sequel, 300: Rise of an Empire.

Furious 7´s James Wan Reportedly Up to Direct Robotech
Quote
Furious 7 director James Wan is being circled by Sony to direct its adaptation of the 1980s cartoon series Robotech, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Wan reportedly has the offer and is in early talks to helm the live-action film, the rights to which Sony Pictures secured last month. A Robotech film had previously been gestating at Warner Bros. since 2007; at the time Tobey Maguire was attached to produce.

Robotech (dat name) + Hollywood = dead but Macross + James Wan = eyes
Macross Plus is my favourite OVA so go and watch that. The japanese dub is the way to go of course but they got a younger Heisenberg to voice the lead in the american dub. Lol.

Edit: Why You Haven't Seen Any New Macross in the West for Nearly 15 Years

How the heck does anyone score rights to anything involving Macross or Robotech? The last I read on the subject, the whole mess was a snarl that dwarfed every other license argument ever, easily.

I know and forbes is confused too. Sony pictures is a mess and the writer they hired sucks but James Wan is the perfect fit for Macross as him and the source material are the definition of style over substance (with the scripts for Plus being the sole exception).
He is also allowed to play with big money which this one will need but will he end up directing in the end. Well i want him too!

Will this Rube Goldberg machine of a movie work out? Beats me and they want to turn this into a cinematic universe too but this first film is the one current anime adaptation by Hollywood that has even a chance to work out so let´s see what happens.

Did i just start Macross appreciation week on MU? biggrin and here is my viewing guide.
