Just as a heads up I am looking through "animal characteristics".
So I'm looking for manga like usagi otoko tora otoko and sex pistols where the characters act out some of their interactions or emotions with each other while being reperepresented as animals or take on the appearance of an animal.
Don't have a problem with any genres. Well generally.

Fruits Basket, maybe? Is a shojo manga.
Inuyasha... Is not the main idea, but some characters (like Inuyasha or Shippo) become or looks like animals.
Spice and Wolf.
Wolf's Rain!! *-*

Kodomo no Jikan: two secondary characters are often portrayed as a cat and a rabbit.

Don't know if you are into books but "Written in Red" by Anne Bishop. Might keep you interested.

Thanks. The wild series and barairo my honey were a lot more of what I was looking for and I would suggest them here as well.

I think you're gonna like Doubutsu No Kuni. The few human main characters don't transform or take many direct characteristics from animals, but the story is absolutely surrounded by all kinds of animals who often take anthropomorphic appearances and interact with humans and animals alike. For instance the Tanuki family that takes care and helps raising the story's main character, Tarouza, are all designed anthropomorphically and from the start up till about the middle of the series, lots of fun and warm emotions are conveyed between the Tanukis, Tarouza and other story animals.
And despite the warm moments early on, meanwhile a serious plot is continuously being rooted, getting increasingly expanded and serious the more the story progresses.

Now while being in a completely different mood than most of the series being mentioned, since I've been looking for info on it lately, I'm gonna mention Kouya ni Kemono Doukokusu for those wishing to investigate further. Largely untranslated so far, but hopefully the situation may improve now that the series has been completed.
Details about the story aren't much understood due to most of it being untranslated apart from the first 3 chapters, but where it relates here is that many of the characters featured in the story have been genetically modified and take on vivid characteristics of certain animals. The difference in tone is that it's very action oriented (in fact it has some of the best action scenes you could hope to find) and can be quite gory. The story and backdrops look very interesting, but then again, these need translation in order to be properly appreciated. Hopefully some group will be picking up this series.

Yes, this is an awesome and underrated manga. Also, it's published in English as "Animal Land" by Kodansha Comics.

Thanks very much.
Dang I still don't know why I dropped animal land (doubutsu no kuri) just spent the latter half of my night finishing it.
Also for all the proceeding suggestions I at one time tried them alteast but they all still appear like good ones to try again in bit. Still can't figure what I didn't like to drop it.
edit: after those new suggestions I have to say would really like another like koketsu dining but where it takes place in the teen years or just the learning to adapt while being a humanoid with a animal head.
