Nothing licensed unless it is completed and all of it is translated.
(Too many times the licensed company drops it or some other circumstance so it doesn't get finished)

Preferably complete and completely (or at least mostly) translated.
(Too many things I was reading ends up getting licensed and then I have to wait years before I can get updates)


I want an intelligent lead that is actually smart and resourceful, not just one who is smarter than everyone else in the story.
So I don't want to constantly second guess the protagonist and question the logic behind their choices.

I would prefer it if their creativity was clearly shown also, so they may come up with resourceful solutions to problems rather than just pushing through by sheer force or will.

I don't want the protagonist's solution to be pulled out of thin air. So nothing like a plot twist ending without any foreshadowing.
If there are no hints of it, no "the mastermind was the butler seem in one scene the entire time," but rather there should be some hinting of it or clues or some kind.

I would prefer it there was some action and adventure.

I guess that's everything I really need, but there are other things I would like too but I'm not explicitly looking for.

-Romance is a plus.
-I could go for a female lead (been reading from a lot of male points of view lately Dx )
-It would be nice if the protagonist was in a different world than their own (lots of VRMMO stories lately, or being pulled into a game like world it seems)
-A weak to strong protagonist would be nice, although I guess I wouldn't mind one who just starts out really strong or goes through the entire thing weak either
-A misunderstanding or misconception about the protagonist would be greatly appreciated (atm the only example that comes to mind is Mx0 where the protagonist goes through is thought by most to be extremely powerful when he's essentially powerless)
-Please no one oblivious, especially if there's a harem (even if it can be funny, after a while seeing a lot of people fawning over someone who has no idea gets annoying)
-A female character that isn't exactly "lady-like" would be nice
-I would prefer a novel/light novel for more detail into the character's thoughts, but I'm good with any reading material I guess

I think that covers everything.
Sorry to describe things to such a length, but I'm not sure how to explain everything in a shorter way.
Sorry for not providing more examples, but I've taken a few months off from reading so I can't recall most titles, and the ones I do remember don't fit too well into what I want.
Also sorry that this isn't exactly coherent, I haven't been able to sleep much lately. Which is why I'm looking for more to read actually. Dx

I think there are 2 directions you can go, either a manga focused on mystery or with a protagonist using strategy/tactics.

In mystery here are my recommendations :

Pluto : By URASAWA Naoki, the author of Monster and Twenty Century Boys, which you should check as well if you haven't already. It's a good mystery manga based on characters and setting from Astro Boy.

Himitsu : The manga translations are very slow but you can check the anime which afaik covers the whole manga. A good mystery read with a SF setting, a bit similar to Minority Report in premise and mood. It has a strong female lead, much like you wanted.

Hyouka : You should either check the novel(s) or the anime, since not much of the manga is translated yet. The MC is rather smart and I liked most arcs. The setting is highschool and there is no violence or murder involved unlike most others in the genre, but the various mysteries are still very interesting and well built. It feels very much like a classic detective story a la Poirot, or Sherlock Holmes unlike say Conan which relies more on action and weird technological tricks. The romance while subtle is cute.

For strategists, here are my recommendations :

One Outs : Even if you don't like sports manga, I think you should still check this one. The MC is probably my favorite "smart lead". He is ruthless, very observant and use bluff/psychological tricks to win. You could also check Liar Game by the same author, I haven't read it for a long time but it should also fit what you want.

Bokko : The manga follows a general during a siege in ancient China. An interesting lead who's older and not as attractive as usual.

The only one(s) I'm familiar with is Pluto and the other works by that mangaka, but they all look intriguing to say the least.
