So the internet is pretty much on fire about Valve monetizing mods and was wondering what MU thinks about it...if we even care at all.

Good topic and I'm against it 100%. Here is why and Forbes is awesome:
Valve's Paid 'Skyrim' Mods Are A Legal, Ethical And Creative Disaster

My gaming podcasts (IGN has good ones) will be fascinating to listen to next week.
This will be reversed in less then 2 months. Or else.. mad
Edit: 5 days hm?

I think I heard that it is up to the modders if the mod will be free or not. So in that aspect it is ok because for many years we have been enjoying game enhancing and fun mods for free. The modders themselves only get little donations or non at all with their effort. The only thing I do not like about it is that almost all the income goes to steam and little only to the modders. i mean they made it, why do they get less? That's pretty greedy of steam. If they fix that issue, I think it's good.

I'm all for having the modders getting paid for putting all their time into making mods, but I agree that Steam messed up here. But someone's gotta wade into the realm of paid modding to sort out all the kinks. I imagine the concept will stick around for the future. (Just look at what happened when the first paid DLC ever came out)

If I remember right, Valve gets 30% for hosting services on Steam, which isn't new since it's been their standard policy applied to the everything sold on Steam like games and trading cards.

The modders get 25% by default unless they negotiate with the developers.

And everything else (defaulting at 45%) is given to the developers since they own the IP.

Uh...
I ain't paying for no mods.
However... I don't see the problem. If people want to charge money for what they've created, and the creators allowing and profiting from it as well, then sure.

I personally wouldn't spend money on anything but the core game and discounted DLCs.
Though, tbh, I don't use mods all that much, besides a bunch for Skyrim which I could live without.

It doesn't seem to be that all the mods were converted into pay-for-use, so there's still a lot of free content (but it's up to the modders, right?).
Charging 0.99$ for a sword is way too much though. They should figure out exactly how much their items should be worth. Because if it were, like 10p, or whatever, I'm sure many more people would opt to buy it.

Well. That was quick.

Valve cancels paid mods for Skyrim

But the way Kroll worded it seems like it'll come back at some point.

Apparently they'll still do it, just on a smaller scale. Somewhere.
Yay for free stuff though!

I think it's a really nice idea to give modders some money for their work(25% is stupidly low though), and encourage them to be able to do this full time. However, the problems are really massive. The people that would redo horse armor for 20 bucks and people who'd outright steal others work would flood the market. Not to mention the turmoil in the community. It's a nice idea, but it won't work in reality.

Remember this shit show of a topic? This fascinating video on why i though that the whole scam was an abortion is worth 15 minutes. The dude is golden! The funniest thing is that Konami is currently selling real horse armor for TPP and i am curious how the Fallout 4 mods on the Xbone (and later PS4) are going to work out.
