This is really random and doesn't have much of a point (which is why I'm putting it in the chat box), but are scanlation groups annoyed if you notice an error in grammar or awkward wording and you send them a message about it? Would they feel like you only have a right to note such things if you are a member of the group?

For example (though this isn't grammar, it's more like a cultural reference), I was just reading chapter 4 of Sengoku Danshi Hana no Ran, and there is a sentence about a cat bus which I am sure is referring to My Neighbor Totoro (in the manga, a kid just got lost and a character says this as a joke). The scanlator didn't seem to get the reference and merely typed below the frame; "I know this sentence is weird...just ignore it..."

The OCD part of me is dying to message the scanlator about it, but I'm not sure if it would just being annoying and if it would be a big deal to fix it. Plus I think it was scanlated quite a while ago.

Usually I don't mind when my readers point out something. I've had someone mention an incorrect date in Gou and another mention some information about nuns for Kagome Kagome. I gladly conversed with them and made the corrections.

It also really depends on the group too. Some members first language may not be English. You also have to put into consideration when this person got into anime. Totoro is pretty old and was released in 2006 by Disney. It was released well before then by another company. As for contacting the group I really wouldn't bother. The chapter was released years ago.

It's best to contact the group as soon as the chapter is released. Otherwise all the other sites will already have the first version and will not replace it half the time with the corrected version.

Thank you! That was a very helpful reply. I'm glad to hear that groups are generally okay with it as long as the chapter was recently released.

(*random aside*) The only group that I have had experience in this area with is the Oddsquad, and the overlay method that they use for reading webtoons directly on Naver seems to leave a lot of flexibility when it comes to correcting past errors. I suppose another aspect (which you mention in your post) that makes it easier and worthwhile for them to correct things is that they don't distribute or allow their translations to be distributed to other sites.

Anyway, thanks again for your answer smile
