That would be the best course of action.
But that would require two things:
1) The admins of MU are fine with handing over the database and source code.
2) Someone is willing to take lead of the other site.

I can't comment on 1), but I know that the leecher are all talk, so I doubt it'll be easy to find a responsible person that can be entrusted with that task over a long period. I for one wouldn't hand over the source code to some random guy that got a bit of a free time right now.

For those reasons I know that it won't happen. It was mainly just a suggestion of process. Honestly I wouldn't hand it over to someone like me, who has free time between jobs or someone on summer break. The reason I wouldn't hand the code to me personally is because I would not know what to do..... wow I just made myself look bad sad

Oh yeah you said that people would complain that their projects aren't being accepted the fix for that is does it have a manga adaptation, no then it will not be accepted, yes then it can be added.

I see your point here. Then again, LNs that don't have a manga counterpart listed on MU would be sacrificed without a point. The web novels that are actually translated don't deserve this treatment as well. I don't know how much of a trouble is controlling the minimum quality of a release, so I won't even think about asking for it. But, more than creating a new website, filtering the type is still the easiest way to go, for me (unless there are problems I'm not aware of). Mind that I have no interest in light novels whatsoever.

(By the way, PROzess, you do a darn good job)

Quote from auriga
The main problem I see with allowing any sub-category (light novel or not) is that you risk creating double standards. If MU were to allow all East Asian comics to be added to the database, why would it then allow only a specific category of novels? What makes this kind of novel so special that it is the only one that gets to be listed alongside comics?

I don't really see a reason to worry about double standards here. Light Novels (regardless of how they are published) are a distinct medium. There is nothing weird/wrong with focusing on certain mediums while ignoring others.

But anyhow, I can answer your question.
This site was initially created with a focus on Manga = Japanese comic variety, later it incorporated Manhwa and Manhua simply because they are very similar to it. And analogous to manga, Ranobe is a specifically Japanese type of novels. Both Manga and LNs are print mediums (nowadays also published digitally) that are specific to the same culture and have large influence on each other.

Another similarity is that both of them combine text and artwork. While traditional novels only focus on text. One could argue that LNs also focus on text much more than on artwork, but still, illustrations are one of their distinctive features.

please don't remove novels and web novels. This is the only site that is even useful for managing my novels and manga collections.

Just add filters so people can filter out novels stuff if it is getting too much

Wait wait wait....
So you're saying the problem is that people aren't reporting some novel translations that are less popular, therefore we should remove all novels that don't have manga?
...
If that seems to be what you're saying, then this would only make the problem WAY worse.
Ohp~! Otome Game no Burikko Akuyaku Onna wa Mahou Otaku ni Natta (Novel) just got a manga finally, better add all 6 volumes that have been translated so far!

... also, for a moderator, you seem to be aruging with peoples opinions a lot. But hey whatever, if this site doesn't have an accurate list of updates, novel or otherwise, I'm not going to use it anymore
...you can argue with that if you want... not going to change my mind.

Wooo hipster mangaupdates~! Or reverse hipster mangaupdates~!" We didn't like it until it got cool!" #NewMotto

Maybe a filter like the one to keep a selected groups realises off the release page.

Remove novels and let the ones who like to read them run their own tracking site. Problem solved.

I don't know about removing the novels because many times the novels are made and then a manga/manhwa/manhua adaption comes after. It would really be a waste of time to just delete some then add them back on, because now there an announcement by a manga publication company.

I completely forgot to mention something I thought of in the past.

For the novels, why not add an option to filter them out from the release page (like Release Filtering in the User CP)?

I can see how that would make the release page a lot cleaner for people who don't want the growing clutter of novel releases.

That way both camps are happy laugh

Where exactly did I make such an illogical conclusion? Lol. I was responding to Yousuke's claim that leaving novels in the database would mean more work for us moderators.

Argumentum ad hominem much? Take note that I only mention my position as a release moderator (assuming you even know the difference) whenever I reply to posts that relate to my function as one. My stance on this issue has absolutely nothing to do with the position I hold.

... Or are you saying that my position disqualifies me from expressing my opinions on the matter? Have you even bothered to consider that I may not be privy to the discussions of the admins? This is news to me as much as it is to you.

I never said I was worried about the "flood of pages." wink

Anyways, I apologize to those who may have been waiting for my responses. I was busy the past two days with real life and burning Loveca.

Remove the "novels". This is mangaupdates not novelupdates.

Most of those translations aren't really translations but machinelation. The text have been through Google translate or some other translation editor program and a dude have been making a continous flow through the stuff that made sense. That's not really a translation where the nuances and complex sentences are gone.

The best thing is when you visit the groups sites you can mostly read: "I just want to tell you that I don't know a word of Japanese but I'm still doing this...also donate moar money"
