This week's poll by Lost Rabbit deals with the "worst" apocalyptic earth to live in. You can interpret what "worst" means for yourself. I listed a pretty good variety of what you'd normally see in stories, so have at it.

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Which of the following demographics do you dislike the most or read the least of?
Choices:
Shoujo - votes: 3042 (33.2%)
Shounen - votes: 1440 (15.7%)
Seinen - votes: 1645 (18%)
Josei - votes: 3037 (33.1%)
There were 9164 total votes.
The poll ended: June 20th 2015

Dang, shoujo and josei were so close together. I'm really surprised by these results, as I believe according to our last gender-specific poll, our site has more female visitors, yet isn't shoujo targeted toward a female audience? Or maybe because most of the males voted against shoujo/josei while the female vote was split.

The most realistic one is the scariest one, so Overpopulation.

Zombies... Because that's the one I'm most likely to survive...

Wow, there's too many "bad options" to choose from... I had a really hard time deciding.

I feel like the the worst ones (for me) would be: Ice Age, Nuclear holocaust, Disease/viral pandemic, or Zombies. Also, the "Earth on fire" needs some specification - is all of the land on fire, constantly? Or are there some "survivable" patches of land out there? Depending on the answer, this could be the worst option.

Sure, nuclear holocaust sounds like a pretty bad option, but if you survived the initial strikes and aren't dying from radiation, chances are you'll be able to survive. For some time, at least.

Zombies would be awful too - a constantly growing number of enemies that want to eat you alive, while humanity dwindles into nothingness... You'd need to luck out and find an easily defensible patch of land you could farm, preferably in a climate with short/easy winters...

Yet, I think that Ice Age would be ultimately the wort one - it would be extremely difficult to grow food, and whatever you would manage to grow would surely not be enough to sustain many people for long. And don't get me even started on the cold that would freeze our very souls ^^;

Anyway, this is all from my pov. I'm sure many of you will have other opinions. Still, surviving an apocalypse comes down to two basic things:
1. Shelter.
2. Food supply.

In the end, most of humanity would die off anyway, leaving maybe a few thousand people scattered around the world. Future generations, if there were any, would all have to live in incest.

*GASP!*
"WOOHOO!" biggrin

I'm honestly pretty surprised that no past polls featured apocalyptic Earths, so this was definitely something that I thought could be fun to choose from.

I'll hold off from voting for some time and just hang around here discussing the options.

Heavens yes, lots of people, that's terribly, terribly frightening.
Far worse than an "unrealistic" Nuclear holocaust or an "unrealistic" asteroid catastrophe .

"Overpopulation and/or loss of resources - 16.2%"
You're all such good kids. Globally population figures are falling, countries like France, Germany, Japan and Russia are offering incentives to make babies, China has loosened their One Child policy, and even in Africa population levels are expected to plateau. In fact most UN estimates have the world's population start to naturally drop by 2050.
But 16% of you still managed to swallow the fearmongering tripe of demagogic Gaia worshipers who like to play Cassandra in the popular press. I'm sure they'd pat your credulous little misanthropic heads if they could.

About the overpopulation... I read some research that said if we all lived like they do in central africa, Earth can support around 22 billion humans (2.2 billion if everone was americans)... biggrin

2 debate topics/questions I have:

>Zombies or vampires?
Which would become the bigger threat against humanity?

>Would dragons hold up as a serious threat against all the world's military?

It's Earth on fire for me....and Super volcano is more or less the same...Man, I hate heat(hotness)...

And Overpopulation and/or loss of resources is something that will be coming eventually...and I'll not be there to witness it by that time...

The scariest one on the list for me is Technology starts failing or global EMP...Damn! If it happens, I'll DIE out of Boredom !!

Question,
At what point of the "event" are we talking about?
Just started? (its front page news and everyone knows whats happening or about to happen)
Midway? (Meaning when the "event" is at its peak of disaster)
or Post? (living with the results as a "survivor")

Just started, you have a chance to survive most of these if you quickly prepare.
Midway, your a statistic and are rolling the dice to see your chances
Post, Survival, what kind of world remains?

Ice Age - Survivable, likely to last for the rest of your life and a dozen or so generations (being hairy comes back into fashion)

Earth on Fire - Game Over. Depends on how the earth is "on fire" but this one generally means a 0% survivability

Rapture - Depends on the rules. Were you "Chosen"? can you still be redeemed? are the horrors that now hunt you killable? Scary, but you may still have a life. (see comics: Strange Girl and Battle Pope)

Robots - Psh... Prob cant win vs the likes of the Matrix overlords or Skynet, But there will be a resistance!

Apes - Gorilla girlfriend might not be so bad (See: Shinka no Mi)

Nuclear holocaust - Fallout world eh... bleak, but I like the fashion

SGND (too much to write) - Don't really understand this one.

Super Volcano - Disaster event, but I don't think one of these will end the world as we know (not globally at least) Find your bicycle and start peddling away from the smoke plume

Disease/Virus - Invest in a cleansuit, gas mask and a gun you'll be alright. (P.S don't be a good neighbor)

Zombies - Depends...
Slow Kind - Other people are more scary
Fast Kind... Rule #1 Cardio

Vampires - 2 Options, Be the Blood pet of a cute/hot vampire or invest in some Desert property

Dragons - Reign of Fire eh...over-sized ballistica come back into style

Aliens - Odds are we are going to lose (Despite what TV/Movies tell us) Maybe we will get lucky... Butt... I do fear that anal probe.

Asteroid - Extinction level? Hopefully your lucky enough to be at the point impact, instant death with the coolest once in a lifetime view ever. Because unless your important, you aint getting into the billion dollar secret government bunkers.

Flood - Waterworld - Hope your not seasick and like fish. Get a nice sail boat and it could be a pretty ok life.

Overpopulation - I'm less worried about the numbers and more worried about the quality (see: Idiocracy 2006)

Infertility - not much of a worry, we have good artificial insemination programs, on a positive note: Less need for condoms!

Technology Fails - can be rebuilt. No biggie

You want a real scary apocalypse? read the "Crossed" comic series (Warning: not for the feint of heart, this series can traumatize you)

The popularity poll reflects the sales numbers if one flips Josei with Shoujo.
Hm and i will take away that the community doesn´t differentiate too much between the older and younger sewing version of both gender demographics as the book market and me certainly don´t.

Earth on fire with a landslide as it sound straight out unsurvivable. Like a hell that never ends but a quick way to whatever comes next has it´s perks...
I recommend Contagion, HBO´s The Leftovers, The Zombie Survival Guide and the Fallout Bible as stying material. World population information are always worth a read too and all generation believe that they live in "end times" as recorded mass panic are as old as the written word. Enough religion strife of these so i expect to live into (an early) retirement and then some.

So Idiocracy, fascistic regimes and an uprising by [insert currently hated minority X] are not of concern? Good to know and Brave New World may have been the best book i ever read so i will finally note that were are now living in Huxley´s dystopia none .

Update: I just saw Uz3r667 bring up Crossed. That one would be No.2 as Crossed + 100 is clearly hell. I read all issue and half of the arcs are of quality (Family Values is the best one after + 100) but the comic makes Berserk´s Rape Horse look reasonable.
99,8% of you aren´t ready for Avatar Press...

Clearly Vampires (just read the book i bring up) and Dragons aren´t even a viable threat in Ice and Fire so what do you expect? It will turn out just like in Drakengard.
I 100%ed for that dead and Nier is a mess.

That data is meaningless if you don't take into account the falling EROI for oil and depletion of aquifers. Due to that, our food production capabilities might fall below the levels where we can support that peak population, and even 6 or 7 billion would be too much.
