Not really.

When i pirate stuff and don't like it, i delete it and never touch it again.
And when i pirate stuff and like it, i buy a real copy to help the creator.

Basically for me pirating is kinda like trying demo of stuff.

Yeah, all the time, but iIt's mostly a guilt that my current means mean I can't buy it like I would if I could.

I feel bad about half the time, honestly. dead

Especially when I download music from the indie bands I love to listen frequently. I mean, I do buy their other content such as their DVD, etc., but right now due to school fees...I am not always capable of doing that financially.

As for scanlations, it's a different story. I have ~120 volumes in in my library right now, though I'm pretty shameless at pirating for other scans on series I don't really care of having solid copies/volumes.

I get my movie/video game fix by legal means however. Only had to emulate one game once, when it had no chance of being released in my language.

With manga it's kind of half the time. I know it's not good but it's better than me pouring money down the drain on maybes

With anime and games? nope

With music? not really...Also I use pandora and if not, spotify would be a good alternative for on demand music if I really wanted to pay to listen offline.

With TV shows, dramas, movies- NEVER

programs like PS and AI? psch, you'll never get me to fork money over for that

Nope. There's been too many instances of me buying into a series that was ongoing only to have it stop spontaneously due to the US publisher deciding to drop it or the US publisher went out of business. While I was able to cut my losses by selling them used, I seriously cannot afford to keep doing this. Even when that didn't happen, there were the other series I bought into because they looked promising but ended up cutting my losses and selling used when they went a direction that I would only consider terrible. I won't even buy manga now until the series has been released fully in English and have already read it......

This poll has me thinking that I should seriously go through the scanlated manga I've downloaded and delete all the crappy stuff that I'm never going to reread as it's a total waste of hard drive space.

Quote from lambchopsil
It appears males tend to focus on the male-orientated series, while the ladies are split pretty evenly. Now I'm curious what happens if you are allowed you create a character in a video game. Do you create a male or female character? My guess is that the split may follow the above guidelines too.

It depends entirely on what the attire... because the first time I played a female character in video game, it was a MMORPG and my lady paladin character ended up wearing bikini armor more often than not. I only wish I was joking.

I buy when it's available, pirate when it's nt.

But even the American publishers jerk us around, yesTokyopop and DMP I AM looking at your sorry asses. I have over a dozen series, that were dropped or we get repeated excuses why they aren't putting out the next volumes. It's tiresome, aggravating and frankly I have lost any sympathy I had for the publishers.

Honestly, I have begun to suspect that June claims to license things solely to stop scanlation and not with any intent of releaseing said volumes.

I feel bad half of time. I try to buy the official version most of the time, because sometimes I just have weird feeling that, with the original crater not getting any/ as much money, they will cancel the series/ show/ product. I rather fork over some money to have the next sequel or for a series to continue then to have it axed or canceled

I mean, step into a mangaka's shoes. Unless you're super popular, you're not makin that much money. And if people rather pirate english manga than to ever buy any official version, you're making even less money.

I have nothin against reading scans before the offical versions come out, but if you like a series, you should probably be buying official verisons

For stuff like scanlations, it's a gray area. If it's not licensed in english, I'm obviously not going to buy it since I don't even understand it, but if someone (illegally) translates it into english, maybe it will become popular enough to get licensed, and if I like it I'll buy it or support the author's work some other way. And if it's never licensed in english/dropped, well, the author didn't lose anything to begin with but at least got their name out to a wider audience.

For other stuff yeah piracy is bad, but I don't feel that a lot of the stuff is worth the price tag. But I have bought albums that I wanted to support the artist for. People will buy concert tickets for artists they really want to see. If it was ME who was creating content that other people were pirating, I guess I'd feel like people should just pay what they really think something intangible like music/etc is worth. Some songs I wouldn't even pay 10 cents for but there ARE songs I'd pay 10$ for.

I am also poor, but if/when I can make more money, of course I would support the content creators more than I do now.

Well, about half the time?

Most of my music collections are pirated ones. But I tend to buy some artists' works since I love it and I want to express it by buying his/her albums.
I usually go to cinema to watch movies that I'm interested in. If I'm not interested then I won't watch it, simple. But for TV series, since it's rarely get licensed in my country, I always download it. The same goes for anime.
I do read and download scanlations, but if I like it and it get licensed in my country, I'll buy it to support the mangaka. I own about 250++ physical copies of manga, not to mention those that have been donated years ago.

The sad thing is the manga that I really want to support hasn't been licensed in my country. Makai Ouji, Aphorism, Silver Diamond, Koori no Mamono no Monogatari, BL mangas sad

For what it's worth I try to eventually buy the stuff I pirate.

I feel self-righteous and I believe art should be shared free. Well, at least if I did become an author one day, I'd allow people to get my works for free too. I follow the philosophy of sharing culture for free.

I don't even have money to buy anything, and if I'm forced to do so I most likely won't do it and I'll just give up on the work : it's not worth it if that's the way the author wants to share it. I also hate people trying to get rid of piracy such as most intermediary between an author and the publication of his works.

The only thing I ever buy are cheap books and maybe games for less than a few euros, and of course the author doesn't even get a single cent through me, but at least it was righteously bought before, and I only do so because I care about things being materials, rather than only having a copy of my game on the computer. I wouldn't spend any money for something I don't really possess ( such as games on Steam or anime episodes on some websites ).

Though, if I had money, I would really like to support a few people and buy my favorite works for the sake of collection, but even then ( in the latter case only ) I don't really enjoy doing it the easy way - through the internet - and I don't feel enjoyment if I'm not getting out of my way or finding it through luck. There's no pleasure in buying things with such godly power and certainly won't do it if unneeded.

There is no reason for anyone to feel ashamed. When it comes to Anime/Manga, the VAST majority of the content is in its original language (Usually Japanese) and is NEVER going to get licensed by a company that will translate it to the various languages that the rest of the world speaks. Therefore, fansubbers/scanlators are the ONLY way we non Japanese speakers can enjoy the content. And of course because we NEED fansubbers/scanlators, we must "pirate" the content whether we like it or not.

However, I like many people will contribute to the industry in various ways if I come across content that I really enjoy (I might purchase the DVD's, knick-knacks, or other products).

But I will admit that saving tons of $ and having a sweet HTPC/Server is pretty sexy too smile wink grin

CMX was the best publisher in the old days for me. Such a great collection of mangas compared to Tokyopop. Very dedicated too. DC comics just had to shut them down....

Have to pay a hefty price just to collect those OOP
